Default Blu-ray option on new MacBook Pro might be coming soon

According to this link Apple might soon announce Panasonic BLU-RAY drive options during Macworld. This is not official news yet and more like a rumor.

I sure hope so.
If that happens, we might wait for the other macs to get them too... like the mac mini and the imac.

pure speculation, but nonetheless, always good to see a story with both apple and blu-ray in the name.

also, apple won't release the hardware until the software is caught up.

I think they would also introduce a tray loading option for the mac pros, which have been without a product refresh for longer than the macbook pros.

For content producers like myself, an external BD drive is ok for the MacPro but a built-in drive is really what I've been hoping for in the MacBook Pro.

I think, more even than Apple's market share, they've been looked to as a design leader in the personal computing world and their adoption of Blu-Ray hardware would be significant.

Could be litigate as there are very strong rumors that the new notebooks will have eternal optical drives. (detachable)

If they released a macbook pro with a Blu-ray drive I would prolly sell mine to one of my friends and get the Blu-ray one. But that all depends how much it would cost, the current Blu-ray drive for macs that was announced is to expensive for a secondary Blu-ray player. I would still do most of my watching on my Plasma.

also (still on the detachable drive thing) with the new fire speeds you might be able to connect the new optical drives to your existing Mac.

yes, the rumored 'ultra portable/macbook pro' is rumored to have a detachable monitor and no optical drive....but these new blu ray burners are slim/slot loading drives, not the external type.

unless apple/consumer would pay the extra cost to have a slim external drive, its destined for internal use.

Default almost started a thread for this rumor....

Check out this article on appleinsider

Quote: "Apple will present a product it has yet to announce at a Final Cut Pro user group event just a day after the Macworld keynote.....The January 16th gathering, which follows a day after Apple chief Steve Jobs' Macworld keynote, will feature "something super secret" from the Mac maker, according to the announcement....Historically, Apple has at times used professional audiovisual industry gatherings to discuss its high-end computers, including the MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, and Xserve."

This sounds very good....I was skeptical that blu-ray support would be an announcement at MacWorld this year, given the rumored ultraportable laptops and other potential major announcements usually reserved for the keynote. but the timing of this event (day after the keynote) along with the audience (professional audiovisual industry) and nature (mac pros, mac book pros) add up nicely.

this "super-secret" product from apple, that may or may not be related to final cut studio pro, could be the exact software update we apple users have been waiting for that is also necessary for them to introduce hardware support.

what "super-secret" product besides blu-ray could be related to a seemingly standard update to a video editing suite?

and I just bought a dell HTPC...it could be an expensive january :-)

I would expect it to be FIRST on the models that support a 1920X1200 screen. Otherwise what's the point? A MacBook pro 17", 24" iMac, and the Mac pro would be the only choices unless there's a new Mac Machinine the works...........

I will respectfully disagree. first, my powermac G4 supports 1920x1200 screen resolution (5 years old) with the standard graphics card from apple so I don't think the support from mac pros or macbook pros needs to be questioned. second, apple has typically included new products in the pro lineup, and I would think this would again be the case seeing the cost of blu ray drives is still fairly high. you may be right, but I wouldn't want my blu-ray drive stuck in an all in one machine.

im low and bumping this thread because I feel like the above article could be huge for blu-ray, and want others to weigh in.

people on the forums of appleinsider agree with me that it could be blu-ray authoring!

I personally doubt this is actually Blu-ray related. Something super secret does not sound like Blu-ray. That would not be such a big thing to most people. It sounds bigger than a BD drive to me. That is not to say Apple might not add a BD drive to their computers (I sure hope to God that they do), but I bet it is something else.
We'll see.

scratch this...a new article was just posted on appleinsider some what confirming my suspicions....apple is set to ship blu-ray drives...

what is more secret than apples stance in the HD format war? Nothing is secret at all about an update coming to Final Cut Studio. I would love to hear what else you possibly think could be "super-secret" at a final cut studio user group.

This may not be the event, but I am 98% sure it is now that I have confirmation they will be shipping soon. What else could it be?

check out the new thread and article...

I've wanted a Macbook Pro with a blu-ray drive ever since I saw Apple's name on the BDA. I can only hope that Macworld brings this wonderful machine to fruition.

Point was, I don't see Apple shipping MacBooks with 13.3" LCDs and Blu-ray drives. This will most likey start out as something for the machines with screens that support Blu-ray's Hd resolution. Otherwise it's only good for burnig large ammounts of data.
