While it sounds like a fifth installment isn’t yet a sure thing, it’s nice to know that Beckinsale wouldn’t be completely opposed to returning once more if things go well for Awakening.

It really just comes organically from whether an idea pops up that seems interesting. With Underworld 4, the studio, quite honestly, would have loved to do one right after Underworld: Rise of the Lycans came out. It was a matter of time because I was working on other movies. But, it was also needing to have enough of a core idea that I could get excited about. It’s all based off of that.

So, no, there’s no immediate plan, but Underworld does have a serialized, extended history and room to evolve. It has a lot of layers of character and past stories. It does have a serial nature to it, so I’m always open to it, but each story has to have a heart that I care about. Until the daughter aspect really became the seed of this idea, there were just talks about Underworld 4 and what that would be. It never really evolved into being a plan to do a movie until I started focusing on what that relationship would be, and what if Selene actually did come face to face with a daughter that she didn’t realize she had.

A lot of these movies are informed by the movies that come before them. There was a lot of stuff in Underworld: Rise of the Lycans that, honestly, I really was pressing to put into the first Underworld, and wanted to go back into that time period and actually show a lot of that and just simply couldn’t. Budget wise and everything, there was no chance I could do that, so that ended up finding its way into Rise of the Lycans. Same thing here. With Underworld: Evolution, they had the idea nad were starting down the road of them possibly having a child, but there was no time to deal with it in that film, so it became the basis for this one.

I love the series, and thought the fourth was the best movie since the original. There are so many places to go with another movie, so I really hope it happens. Actually...I need it to happen! More Kate in leather kicking ass, please.

That'd be even more disappointing than him not being in Awakening. His absence was definitely noted and a disappointment to fans.

I don't know. I know he refused to appear in the current one, so there's a couple stand-ins and a voice double. I'd love to know why.

I was glad he wasn't in it... I haven't seen the first couple of movies since their original releases, but I seem to recall his acting being quite bad even in comparison to the rest of the cast. I could be wrong, I guess... I'll just have to go back and rewatch those films at some point.

Can they get this franchise back on track with character development and stuff though? The first one was was damnned solid and roped us in. The second one was still good but got a little action-oriented. This latest film, which I have not seen yet appears to be one action scene after another with minimal development time and breathing room.

I like Kate in leather too, Id hit dat chit in a second..... but I need more from films like this, especially when the first few did a fine job of mixing the ass-kicking with some exposition and story.

It's not that he's some talented actor the holds the franchise together--that role is only for Kate--but his character has been integral to the story and he is the only remaining character, besides Kate, that can be further developed (i.e. everyone else is dead). Personally, I've enjoyed Speedman's portrayal of Michael and have become accustomed to seeing him. Obviously, he's no Pacino out there, but I thought Underworld 4 took a hit in quality by not having him there, regardless of screen time.

Given the box office performance of Awakening and the story they have setup for another movie, I say do it and that it is extremely possible to happen.

I agree with everything you said except that Underworld 4 took a hit in quality without him. I thought it might early on when this was being made, but after seeing it today, they made it work and it made sense why Michael was only in it for a very small amount of time.

They might get put into a corner though if Speedman continues to refuse to come back though. I don't quite get it as the character of Michael is his biggest thing he's ever done probably, except for Felicity. I can't believe I'm about to say this given how big of a fan I am of the series, but if he still refuses to come back, they might need to recast Michael.

I actually felt like it worked pretty well in the context of the movie.

But I definitely wouldn't be opposed to having him come back for the next movie either. If Speedman says no though, I hate to say it, but recast him. He's not a big enough actor to act like he's bigger than this series.

I disagree. I think they handled having to work around him just fine. Maybe he could have shown up to help out with the fight at the end, but that would have been about it.

Having to work around him is a possible reason why the movie is short, but again, I think they did just fine given that he didn't want to come back. Also, now it gives them even more to work with for a fifth movie. As long as they are willing to recast if Speedman refuses again of course.
