Default Anyone using a 4K player for this?

Can someone name a 4K player that will allow me to watch a 4K movie through a 1080p projector, and downsize the HDR to SDR with no issues. This is primarily to take advantage of the Atmos/DTS X mix. I read that the Oppos have issues downsizing Dolby Vision movies and has bad black crush.

If DV is a requirement then Oppo and LG players are the only choice.
Not sure if the Panny can handle strip HDR. Might want to browse that player's thread.
And the Sony X800.

Geoff said the Panasonic was great at SDR conversion. I can tell you the Sony X800 sucks at it, has massive black crush I found impossible to deal with.

I really wanted to get the Oppo so I'd be set for DV when a true 4K projector releases that can handle DV. I heard the Sony can strip HDR, but it doesn't support DV yet.

Is it the DMP UB900 that he was referencing?

FYI, the current two Sony players will probably never get a DV firmware upgrade, no authoritative Sony source has said so. Just some local reps looking to make a sale, and some unreliable online quotes that keep getting repeated as expert lore.

2018 models may have more DV options, I won't predict anything.
There could be news at events this fall, or CES in January.

Oppo just completed getting HDR supported on the HDMI input with this last beta FW. That was up in the air/promised for a long time. I'm reasonably sure Oppo will be working on the conversion of HDR to SDR issues in the near future so it can't hurt for anyone to request that feature improvement from Oppo Digital via email and get on their mailing list for possibly testing FW samples.

It will probably take a while until true 4K projectors with DV are available for a good price. By that time there will probably players better than anything available right now. The Oppo doesn't use the DV information for SDR conversion. I doubt that the LG does.

I would recommend to look for a player with good SDR conversion and think about DV when you have a projector that supports it.

Thanks for your input. So it seems like the Panasonic may be my best option atm.

per "The state of HDR for Home Theaters":

Quote:
As with HDR10, Dolby Vision authored videos assume very bright displays and there is no specification or guidance offered for how to best display Dolby Vision HDR authored content on a substantially lower brightness display, such as would be typical for a projector based home theater situation. I would note that the version of Dolby Vison used for commercial cinemas presents movies with the HDR authored for a display with a 100 nits peak brightness, which is similar to what a projector based home theater is capable of, but the consumer version of Dolby Vision videos are being authored for much brighter displays. As a result, for Dolby Vision to be directly applicable to a projector Dolby would need to define the tone mapping that would need be applied based on the brightness of the image and this will depend not only on the specific projector’s capabilities, but also on the size and gain of the projection screen being used. Dolby has yet to indicate is such an extension to Dolby Vision will actually happen. Therefore, when or if Dolby Vision support will come to home theater projectors is unknown at this point.
