Daisy von Scherler Mayer’s 1995 cult favorite starring Parker Posey comes to Blu-ray for the first time, thanks to a new 4K restoration from Fun City Editions.

Parker Posey fans rejoice! Her iconic looks and trademark laconic delivery are in full fashion in Party Girl, which looks and sounds more glorious than ever thanks to a new 4K restoration from Fun City Editions. Daisy von Scherler Mayer’s film follows Mary (Posey) on her screwball-like journey from a life of late nights and hangovers to romance with a falafel vendor (Omar Townsend) and a potential long-term career as a librarian.

This quintessential ’90s gem harkens back to ’30s and ’40s comedies while remaining firmly rooted in its own decade with its striking wardrobes and a stacked soundtrack that includes Tom Tom Club, Run-DMC, Deee-lite, Carl Craig and Ultra-Naté. Music supervisor Bill Coleman’s Peace Bisquit has made the entire soundtrack available on SoundCloud.

Founded by industry veteran Jonathan Hertzberg, Fun City Editions focuses on reissues of maverick repertory cinema which spans an array of genres, with a unifying focus on forgotten and overlooked treasures. Party Girl’s Blu-ray release marks the first for FCE with its new distributor MVD, as well as the first title in their ongoing AIP (American Independent Project) series.

FCE has previously partnered with distributor Vinegar Syndrome for releases of titles including Natural Enemies, Married to the Mob and Cutter’s Way, which we recently featured in our monthly Shelf Life column. FCE will continue to work with Vinegar Syndrome in addition to their new collaboration with MVD.

Included on the Party Girl release is the 4K restoration of the film, undertaken fully by Fun City Editions from the film’s original 16mm negative, along with new video interviews with Parker Posey, Daisy von Scherler Mayer, Bill Coleman and co-writer and co-producer Harry Birckmayer. MVD will release the Blu-ray on March 28, with a limited edition slipcover designed by Jess Rotter.

Cool this is coming. Whoever designed that poster obviously hadn't watched the movie since, as those of us who have seen it know, a librarian is a professional with a master's degree in library science. Though I suppose the more accurate "There's a new potentially aspiring librarian in town" doesn't make for as a good of a tag line.

I really doubt that detail was a huge concern with the marketing department of a movie studio.

Still curious about this. Was it really originally shot on 16mm? Nowhere else I'm looking mentions that.

Me too, but to me...Parker Posey is just very anoy... well you know the rest. So probably why I never saw this. Surprised CC didn't get this, but FCE runs the same streets too, so makes sense .

Judging by the footage, yes. It has that grainy look, as well as the depth of field usually found on 16mm shot films (less shallow focus/DOF).

I'd never heard of this, going to check it out later. Swoosie Kurtz and John Cameron Mitchell sold me. Nothing better than a short lived '90s sitcom.

The trailer seemed to be a staple on just about every second VHS rental I remember from those days. The movie itself is cute - part rom-com, part indie flick. The librarian aspect gives it a distinct touch. Although one's enjoyment definitely hinges on your tolerance for Parker Posey.

It's currently streaming on Criterion Channel for anyone who wants to check it out beforehand.

Low quality, and in full screen 1.33 instead of widescreen 1.85.
