Default "A Retail Perspective on the Format War"

Thought this was a pretty good read, posted at The Digital Bits.

Very good read, and very true. There is so much more profit in BD, and the presence is growing more powerful by the day when I step inside stores that sell HD equipment and media. Hopefully pretty soon we will start seeing stores like Best Buy choosing sides, that will be a deciding factor if WB doesn't make their move soon.

That gray on black was hard on my eyes
(Or I need to go see an optometrist soon )

But yeah if you read the other thread about what we're seeing in various BB stores and the like, it does certainly ring true.

Penton hinted that we might hear something from a major retailer at CES...

Admittedly, I haven't been an a BB or Wal*mart since just before Christmas, but at least in my area I hadn't seen any change in the division between blu and red sections.

In a last-minute frenzy to find that "last gift", I visited three different Wal*mart stores on Christmas Eve. Among the chaos, I was surprised that in each store, I saw one or two people in line at the electronics counter with a blu-ray player they were getting ready to purchase.

Hope its BB. BB has been beefing up shelf space for 3 months now for Blu-ray. HD DVD is down to 1/2 a shelf and I never see anyone there looking for HD DVD movies anymore. Just a couple tumble weeds and the sound of crickets.

IF it was Best Buy that went exclusive to Blu-ray that's lights out no matter what WB or any other studio does. They are the number 1 hi-def disc seller in the country. The Best Buy I shop at just south of Denver, CO has upped their Blu-ray selection. I'd say it's 70:30 now when it used to be 50:50.

****in' A, man. If BB goes Blu-ray exclusive, HD DVD might as well turn off the lights cuz the party's over. There's absolutely no recovery from that.

I can read Bill's website 20 minutes after leaving just by closing my eyes. That image gets burned in.

I'm in my BB's HD DVD section all the time. Now, granted I'm always facing the opposite direction, looking at the Blu-rays, I'm still at least in there.

Agreed. BB has to be the dominant HD selling store in the U.S. That place is packed. Always! The ratio at our BB is about 75% now. Besides the regular shelf space, they have stand-up card board displays for Resident Evil on BD, and for Disney releases on BD. Blu-ray has already won. Just because the Titanic hasn't officially sunk yet doesn't change the fact that it is continuously taking on water and its just a matter of time.

The Best Buy in my area has three separate displays playing the Blu demo disc. It was pretty cool walking down the outer isle and seeing the same demo disc at three different stations. Also the Blu disc section has about a 5:2 disc selection advantage.

I guess HD DVD will be just happy to look at someones back these days and pretend someone is paying attension to them. Poor lonely disks. Not their fault they were bourne that way.

I doubt BB will do anything drastic anytime soon. What they might do is gradually stop doublestocking Warner releases on both formats and stock only one format for the Warner movies, perhaps to test the waters.

I don't think they'll have that option much longer...
