Actually, I find that HD DVD has a terrible name. A name like that causes consumer confusion, especially given that upscaling players also say things like "DVD in HD." The HD DVD name does very little to differentiate itself from an upscaling player, and it may very well confuse consumers when their HD DVDs don't actually play on their HD-upscaling DVD players.

That aside, I feel that even the connotation of the name is bad. HD DVD does not connote something new or innovative; it just sounds like a slightly upgraded DVD (even though we know that's exactly what it is) while "Blu-ray" tells the consumer immediately that it is something new and possibly better.

While I think the HD DVD name had an early advantage in implying to consumers exactly the medium's intended use, I feel that that point has been rendered moot now that people are aware of what "Blu-ray" is.

Only thing good about eitch-dee-dee-vee-dee is that we won't have to pronounce it for much longer.

I agree with Seretur, I've always hated saying or reading 'HDDVD'. It's such a mess of consonants, that it just brings the brain and the tongue to a complete stop trying to get threw it. I mean, which of these is more pleasant to say and hear?

"I just bought a new hddvd"

or

"I just bought a new blu-ray"

Default I disagree

The HD DVD name sounds like something that was hastily named only to beat Blu-ray and not to have its own identity so it would stand out from the rest of other electronic products.

Blu-ray sounds much better because it makes you think 'progress' from regular DVDs and the name sounds like a new product that's worthy of being mentioned in pop culture references and with people around you. HD DVD is only 5 words but it sounds really long.

I totally agree, HD DVD does sound like an upscaled DVD product rather than an actual next generation High Definition disc media.

Lol its funny, its one of the main reasons i was going to support blu back in the days where i dindt know what was what and the fact that PS3 had a built in drive, but yeah blu-ray sounds next gen, while HD-DVD sounds current gen..
