Good day!
A couple of us have been having a great discussion regarding room acoustics, treatments and innovations as to how to further improve our current home theater setups, both dedicated and living areas... you can find that thread here, thanks to prerich... Here is a great introduction to the topic... http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volum...04-part-1.html Although not as easy to read in the first place, this is tho a great amount of knowledge gathered by yet my much appreciated colleague, Irritate Guy over at Sound and vision magazine... this is definitely a great place for those clamoring for information.
no more spoonfeeding so to speak. ![]() again, it doesnt hurt to ask for more, or a little bit of clarification here or there, but its always great to skim thru the material at hand, and then let us know how we can further help out. Last edited by jomari; 08-26-2008 at 10:30 PM. |

Myself and others (I'm sure) appreciate the effort Jomari!
I'm one of those that have been pushing for more education on room accoustics and treatments. I certainly didn't have the time or patients to create this -- it looks like a great starting point (lots of information already). Now lets just hope people put the information to use ![]() |

OK to post pics here, or move to another thread? I just finished 3 bass traps that I'm using on a shared wall in my townhouse. I'm currently using 2 on the wall to absorb some of the bass that travels through. So far the effect of the sound panels is incredible. The sound vibrating around that back wall has greatly diminished, and the bass response in the listening area sounds tighter than before (an after effect I wasn't expecting but greatly welcome
![]() I made the traps out of 1x4's, Roxul Mineral Wool, $2 "L" brackets from Lowes, $1/yd material from Wal-Mart and cotton batting. 3 Panels cost me less than $100 and were well worth it. Wish I could do more! ![]() ![]() |

Very cool! Like you, I was amazed at how much of an improvement was obtained with even modest treatment. Placing bass traps in the room corners will have an even bigger effect upon bass "tightness". They can be triangular or circular in order to minimize room intrusion (and WAF).
I see lots of opportunity for H/F "glare" with the hardwood floor etc. Do you plan to treat the sidewall 1st reflection points and/or put a throw rug on the floor? Both are easy and can be relatively inexpensive. |

![]() Corner bass traps sound good - thanks for the tip! Do they have an effect even behind my sofa? I'm amazed at what you can do for little money, if you want to get a little dirty/sweaty. ![]() |

Believe it or not, the general advice from acoutics experts is that all corners of the room should be treated for bass trapping - that's all wall/wall, floor/wall and ceiling/wall junctions. As a practical matter, few of us can actually do that, but I've found that treating only the four wall/wall junctions results in startling improvement. ![]() |

OK, so here are the corner bass traps I use: http://www.realtraps.com/p_mondotrap.htm
I purchased the corner mondos with wall stands. Effective? You bet, but also big and not even remotely attractive, though RealTraps has recently begun offering them with nice fabric options (too bad I purchased before they began that practice ![]() Here's a smaller type which looks like a better fit for your room: http://www.gikacoustics.com/gik_tri_trap.html These, too, may be purchased with multiple fabric options. Finally, here's what I'm considering as replacements for the rear corners: http://www.acousticsciences.com/tubetrap.htm Cool-looking, multiple fabric options, but expensive. To minimize costs, you can make your own tube bass traps. Here's a DIY site: http://www.teresaudio.com/haven/traps/traps.html With some additional guidance in a related forum: http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/forum...pic.php?t=7878 and another: http://home.comcast.net/~jtgale01/diy2.htm You could also consider making your own triangular corner traps a la the GIK Tri Trap link I've shown, but I couldn't readily find a DIY post on how to do this. It can't be hard. I'll keep looking and/or Rich or jomari or mdabb may know of one. More later on H/F reflective panels for the 1st reflection points. |

The only DIY triangular shaped one I know off hand. You can always adjust size accordingly. Shouldn't be difficult......... http://www.supernova-music.eu/extra/...s_trap_en.html |

Might be worth checking out the Echo Busters "Corner Buster". I've not tried them myself, but they were favourable reviewd in TAS a couple of years ago. $190 for four from Acoustic Sounds.
