Default James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction

https://thefilmjunkies.com/james-cam...vTFn2wtbxTl6zU

When “James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction” originally aired on the AMC Network two years ago, I had a strong desire to watch the six-episode series. However, I just never got around to it. Thankfully, the documentary series arrives on DVD and Blu-ray this week and I finally had the chance to check it out. As someone who grew up loving sci-fi films (and still do), the idea of watching one-on-one conversations between James Cameron and slew of icons like Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Ridley Scott, and more was one that sounded fascinating.

The six episodes deal with different elements of science fiction. The first episode focuses on alien life (“Aliens” “E.T.”, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”), the second episode is about space exploration (“Star Trek”) the third episode deals with monsters (“Godzilla”, “Jurassic Park”, “The Thing”) and the final three episodes talk about dark futures, intelligent machines (“Terminator”) and time travel (“Back to the Future”, “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure”). Each episode runs about 45 minutes and truthfully, that is not nearly enough time. Cameron did his best to squeeze in as much history in each episode and it does make for an entertaining watch if you are a fan of the genre. I just felt that adding another 20-30 minutes per episode would cover much more ground.

Cameron doesn’t just call upon his filmmaker buddies. We hear from stars like Whoopi Goldberg, Jeff Goldblum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Keanu Reeves, Milla Jovovich, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. There are also tons of sci-fi experts, screenwriters and even more filmmakers that take part in this limited series. The interesting thing for me is that When I read up on what each episode was focused on, I was sure that certain ones I would enjoy more than others. After binging the six episodes, I realized that wasn’t the case. I found myself deeply into each episode equally. Time travel has always been a personal favorite, but I found the intelligent machines just as engrossing. Again, I wish there were more interviews and more films discussed, but in all fairness, Cameron delivered an impressive list of talent to share their views and thoughts on the genre and anyone who is a fan of sci-fi should find much to love about “James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction”.

I pre-ordered this when it became available after watching a few clips on YouTube. Looks like a lot of great interviews and information.

All I want from Cameron is The Abyss and True Lies. That's it. How can I watch a documentary about filmmaking when he refuses to release two of his biggest - and arguably best - films of his career?

It's weird that those two still aren't on Blu-ray, but with Disney owning them now... who knows if it'll ever happen.

I'm boycotting all James Cameron products until THE ABYSS is released on Blu-ray, and yes I realize that will never happen.

$13 on Amazon right now. I caught it on Shudder, but at that price I'll gladly dip for the extended interviews. Great mini-series doc! I'd love to see a continuation where we get newer directors in the table interviews or lower-third discussion such as Denis Villeneuve, Duncan Jones, Alex Garland, Gareth Edwards, Rian Johnson, Bong Joon-ho, J.J. Abrams, Neill Blomkamp, and even Justin Benson/Aaron Moorhead. Of course, I'd also love for James Cameron to finalize a certain couple of films as well for HD releases...

The tie-in book has transcripts of the extended interviews, along with essays by some of the experts from the show. Good stuff.

It seems he's too busy working on new things to make time so some of his past works can be released. Maybe if he would push off or shelve one of these we'd already have The Abyss or True Lies already.

He interviewed Ridley Scott - the director responsible for the two most influential sci-fi movies post-Star Wars - but it's Zoe Saldana who gets a mention on the cover?

Probably just AMC trying to make it more attractive to the average punter on the street. But yeah, Ridley's name should obviously be on the cover.

James Cameron’s Story Of Science Fiction was released on the Blu-ray format on 7-28-2020 (lossless audio for main program and all bonus material lossless audio). Two BD-50’s with disc 1 using 28.3GB, disc two using 33.2GB). I got a chance to watch this AMC TV mini-series on Blu-ray and it was very well done. James Cameron interviews George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Will Smith, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sigourney Weaver, and many other famous people involved in the creation of science fiction movies (with some TV series mentioned also). Many of my favorite directors and actors in this mini series on Blu-ray.

Some topics are intelligent machines, time machines, space explorations, and many other topics. Artificial Intelligence can be both real awesome and good for humanity and when given free will like the fictional HAL9000 can have negative effects on the human race for the first fictional 2001 movie, but HAL9000 becomes a good computer in the 2010 the sequel. Humans beings have free will with a moral code, Artificial intelligence computers with the ability to have a free will, need a moral code also if they every become a reality in the 21st Century or beyond. A lot of very interesting topics in this Blu-ray mini-series and highly recommended for all science fiction fans.

Randy Miller III wrote an in-depth professional review on this awesome James Cameron science fiction documentary.

This program is an AMC cable /satellite channel original documentary and was never produced in 3D. So, you most likely will never see a 3D conversion of this program for the Blu-ray 3D format.

Well that’s Abysmal! As long as this gets a 3D release!
