Angry PS3 issue (it's not being awesome)

Hi guys,

I'm hoping someone can help me or give me some suggestions on a problem I'm having:

Bottom line: my PS3 doesn't want to play my How I Met Your Mother - Season 4 discs (anymore). I think I bought the discs on day 1, watched them and haven't touched them since.

The problem: it'll load the "this disc has been manufactured to the latest blablas" and "upgrade your firmware if you're experiencing problems viewing this disc" screen, but then the screen will flash green for a half second, and then go back to the main PS3 menu.

I've tried:

Cleaning the discs, even though they weren't dirty
Resetting to default settings on the PS3
Disabling that 24hz thing
Disabling internet connectivity
Trying other Blu-Rays, and they all work

I almost feel like buying new discs and trying them out but don't want to take the chance the store won't accept the return (but that's just me being skeptical).

Any suggestions? Does anybody have issues where they can't play a certain title in their collection but can play everything else?

I appreciate any feedback. I was almost ready to throw the controller across the room the other night.

Thanks guys,

A

if all other blurays work, and its just these discs that dont, it sounds like the discs are the problem, if youve watched them before and they were fine, it sounds like something to do with a firmware update changing something that makes them not jive with the system, you dont have or know someone else that has a stand alone blu ray player do you? you could try them in another player to see if they work, i have a copy of pineapple express that gets stuck at the loading screen now, but worked fine when i bought it, same thing, something weird with BD live i think was the explanation i got, and to watch it, i have to disconnect from the internet, so BD live isnt trying to do whatever it does

to summarize, i would:

try discs in a different player
try discs while NOT connected to the internet
if neither helps, exchange discs for a new set

Disc 1 doesn't work for me either. And I have two sets. I think it's definitely a firmware problem.

I tried emailing Sony but they were not interested

Go to settings, then video settings, then BD internet connection and select confirm. Let me know how it turns out.

This was the same issue for the Pineapple Express blu-ray.

My 60GB PS3 would not play disc 2 of Weeds season 2( or maybe season 3). It played in my roommates 40GB PS3 and a friends SA blu ray player. Same firmware as my roommates. That is only disc I have ever had an issue with. It would not even recognize the disc. weirdest thing

Possibly try deleting the saved BD file on the PS3. I remember this has helped with similar issues before.

This didn't work. It literally sounds like it tries to load once and then knocks straight back to XMB after the screen telling you to make sure you have latest firmware updates. (Which I obviously do.)

There is no BD File for HIMYM on the PS3.

Either the disc is bad or the ps3 just can't play that particular disc.

I guess the ps3 can't do everything.

You might want to take a close look at the disc. Here's what my PS3 apparently did to a Netflix streaming BD:

Sounds like your PS3 has good taste. JK

Do you have a friend that has a PS3 you can try it on? I had problems in the past with BD live storing information and I was not able to play the disc again until I deleted the file.

From investigating further (US Playstation official forums) it's a common issue for the last few weeks/months.

It's definitely a PS3 problem. Especially considering I've tried 3 sets on 3 different PS3's and 2 separate Blu-Ray players now. Works great on other players, but not PS3.

Have you downloaded and installed the latest PS Firmware, version 3.30? If not give it a try.

Ive had a my copies of American Psycho and Lord of War go bad. They were both brand new purchases and worked perfectly the first few times i watched them. Then after sitting on the shelf for a few months with all my other Blus, they wouldnt work on my PS3 anymore. They were in perfect physical shape with not a mark or scratch on them.

I had my friend try them on his Blu-ray player and same thing. I ended up getting a new copy of American Psycho and it works perfect again. Im thinking there is something with Blu discs that somehow makes them go bad. As to what or why i do not know. It doesnt seem to be a common issue as i own over 100 blus and it has only happen twice to me.

Yes I have the latest firmware, and have tried another new copy from a store. Still doesn't work. So 4 copies have been tried and it doesn't work.

You should make some phone calls...try sony...try the website of the place that made the movie...maybe its the disc and they can send you a different one...or get something for free who knows..

try googling it also..maybe theres other ppl with that same problem somewhere.

dont throw your controller tho....once you settle down you will regret having to buy a new one lol.

Alekjan, I am having the same issue. But only with Disc 1 of Season 4. There is definitely something wrong. The disc is fine. I have watched the Season 4 Disc 1 on my ps3 before. I am all updated and everything. I have no idea what else to do.

I just read your post and tried my copy of Lord of War. I got a error message "This video cannot be played" (80029940). I'll try it on a stand alone player before I buy a replacement (thank god to movie is dirt cheap now).

I don't have empirical evidence to back this up, but my intuition says this is another manifestation of the PS3's recent BD playback trouble, and not actually a defective disc. I've had truly bad discs (not ones that went bad, ones that were defective on the purchase date and were immediately exchanged), and the PS3 would just not recognize them, or freeze during playback. The only times I've seen error messages were for region-locked discs or PAL-format discs - i.e., ones where the PS3 could physically read the disc, but didn't like the format of what it read.

I know American Psycho and Lord of War are incredibly old BD discs and are 'standard' instead of 'enhanced' (different BD authoring profiles) - so I wonder if something with the latest PS3 firmware broke support for the few original 'standard' discs.
