I don't know how many of you already know these exist (I just recently found out about them myself), but they are pretty cool...
![]() ![]() These are USB-based Sega Controllers, based around the design of the Japanese & later 2nd edition US Sega Saturn Controllers. While the Saturn wasn't a very successful system in the US, I still liked it a lot, and the controllers for it were awesome, especially for fighting games. These USB versions are from Asia. They were never released directly in the US. But, they can be purchased on ebay. I just got two of them for about $30 each, including shipping. They were shipped to me from Hong Kong, and the shipping time wasn't too bad. They were designed to mainly work with PCs and MACs, but they are also compatible with PS3. Mine just showed up yesterday. I promptly hooked one up to my PS3 and started playing Street Fighter IV, and it worked great. It is perfect for the Street Fighter games, or that recent Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection. They come in a few colors. I got 2 black ones. But there is a white version (as shown in one of my pics), and a gray version. There may be more, but these are the ones I am aware of. As you can see from the pics, there are 6 "face" buttons. The top 3 are labeled X, Y, Z, and the bottom 3 are A, B, C. X and Y are the Square and Triangle Buttons. A and B are the X and Circle buttons. Z and C are L2 and R2. And the L and R buttons on this controller are L1 and R1. The start button is, of course, the start button. The only downsides to this controller are that it is wired, which stinks, and that there is no central PS button. So, you will need to keep a regular PS3 controller or your Blu-Ray remote handy to get the the main system menu using the PS button. There is no select button either, but most games let you choose options with the directional pad anyway, so that's not a big deal. I know that there are some street figher based pads out there now with a similar lay out. I haven't tried the PS3 versions, but I do have some of the ones from PS2 from years ago, and while they were nice, They were just never as good as the Saturn controller to me for those types of games. The beauty part is that for anyone with backwards compatible PS3's, they can use these with older games from the previous systems. I have yet to test how this works with 2 controllers hooked up. I hope that it recognizes one as player 1 and player 2, but I am not yet sure. I will try that out tonight. These are also supposedly compatible with Xbox 360, for you multi-console owners. I also have a 360, but have yet to test this out. I will also try this out tonight and post an update with that info as well. So, for those of you who can live with the fact that these are wired controllers, I highly recommend them! |
