I had this "Can Not Play" issue for the very first time last week. On a disc that previously played fine. I checked the disc and it did have a small finger print, which I cleaned off and then it worked fine. Who knows...
The only major issue I have had with this player is that it will totally freeze once a month or so, and I'll have to unplug and start over.

WAR played fine on my S300 w/t latest firmware
I've noticed some titles take a few minutes to load.

I purchased war and had a problem when I watched it the other day too. I have not updated the firmware yet and am running version 3.30 on my BDP-S300. The disk played all the trailers and the menu, but I only got a chance to watch the first like 3 min. of the movie before it froze. I held the power button down for a few seconds to reset the BDP-S300...waited again for the disc to load just to have it do it again. I gave up and waited to the following day to watch it. It played fine then, but when I watched the extras it began to freeze multiple times again. Maybe it has something to do with the PCM 7.1 lossless soundtrack...IDK.

UPDATED:
Installed firmware update 3.70 and WAR now plays perfectly.

I have V 3.3 and watched WAR on S301, and it had issues getting past Loading blue bar when disc is inserted, i have to hit play or menu for the GEAR ICON of LOADING for it to work. After that the movie works fine.,

tested it on my s300 (3.7 fw), loaded up relatively quick for a bdjava disc and had no problems playing back. The Pop up menu functions differen't than the ps3 though, you don't get the pip'd video during pop up it just lays over the main movie a lil harder to read, but it works.

If it's a rental, it's either dirty or damaged. Irrespective of what you might here, IMO, BD players are highly sensitive to dirty disks. I have recently taken to ultrasonic cleaning all of my rentals, then using a microfiber cloth and glass cleaner. BD titles from Netflix, about 50% have problems, if you don't clean them METICULOUSLY. I really think too many people masturbate on their rented disks.
