Default Time to say goodbye to dual-format players!

I think it's safe to assume that after the latest developments Samsung will no longer design anymore dual-format players. LG I'm not quite sure about since that's all they've been doing since early 2007. Quite frankly there's just no use for them, not to mention the added cost. Any thoughts?

I think some of HD-DVDers may purchase a dually. That way they won't feel like their entire collection has to be scrapped. No Blu-ray folks will touch a dually now. The market for a dual format player just shrunk considerably with WBs announcement.

I really hadn't heard much about the LG player. I know that the company had released a dual player and judging by your comment, I'm assuming that it is horrible. Am I correct?

To think I considered buying one back in October! Or even an A-20 (along with BluRay player) - solely to get TF. In any case, I quickly came to my senses.

I don't see much of a market for Dual-format players when those with HD-DVD already have their working players and could get a PS3 for much much cheaper.

That's a pretty good point. Actually, now that I think about it the only company for which dual-format players would make perfect sense to would be Toshiba. This way they wouldn't totally abandon their HD DVD supporters and they could also provide a vehicle of transition from one format to the other.

the samsung dual player is a nightmare with bugs galore. I think LG and Samsung are killing that sector without any help from the format war.

Yep. This would be the only way for Toshiba to save face with current customers while also making their hardware manufacturing transition to blu-ray players.

I've heard numerous reports about the shortcomings of the new Samsung dually, but I haven't heard too many negatives about the second generation LG player. At any rate, I guess these players will be a huge turn-off to the vast majority of the consumers. If not for their pricing, definitely for their functionality.

The question is whether they could produce a dual-format player at a price that would be accepted by existing HD-DVD owners. A lot of the HD-DVD crowd is complaining that they can't afford even a $299 player, but I suppose that persons who can't afford that level of player are unlikely to have amassed a large software library in the first place. And such would just reinforce the idea that the potential market for a dual player is small indeed.

Unless, Toshiba starts an HD DVD player trade-in program. If they indeed come out with a dual-format player then they could offer a trade-in incentive to current HD DVD owners. Toshiba is used to losing a lot of money on each player sold, what's another $100 to $200 lost in order to save face with their current supporters.

Of course this is ridiculously hypothetical.

Obviously with my $1000+ investment in Blu-Ray I want it to win this war, HOWEVER, I don't understand why everyone is announcing victory after WB's announcement, Universal and Dreamworks are still on HD-DVD's side, and Probably bound in a contract.

Universal and Dreamworks are HUGE producers, and to be honest ALOT of my favorite movies are Universal or Dreamworks pictures.

I just don't think its right for everyone to go around ASSUMING virtory, with out any real Victory announced.

I think Toshiba will likely make dual-format players once they've officially thrown in the towel, instead of a blu-ray standalone.

I guess I spoke too soon. According to today's CES pre-show announcement Samsung's second generation dually is scheduled to be released in a few months. Let's hope it gets postponed indefinitely.

ummm how many movies do you think they can come out with a year??? 60 80 max in all
there no way that they can out do the othere 5 and who want to spend $100
just to get a small hand full of movies if they can just get them next year
PS dont fake backing Blu-ray if your pro HD-DVD will not kill you or ban you unless you start useing FUD

I have yet to see anything Samsung makes that is worth anything. All they make is garbage plain and simple.

Fake backing Blu-Ray.. Umm yeah whatever dude. That's why i just spent $400 on a Panasonic BD30, and I have $500 in Blu-Ray movies, right?

But everyone acting like the war is over before its offically announced, is how rumors get started, Don't speak unless you have the FACTS to back it up!

All it takes is money for any one of the production companies to flop to the other side.

If I did not believe in the Success of Blu-Ray I would have bought HD-DVD to begin with since it was cheaper, and they had the Matrix series... Which in an uneducated world, would have been enough to sell me on it.
