This is pretty exciting news, the first Trek movie without Kirk or Picard.

"Decades before 2009" would put it somewhere between Enterprise and Strange New Worlds.

It would be funny if it was a reboot of ST: Enterprise.

I agree with the live long part but the prosper part is long past.

So will it be in the Kelvin timeline then? Or in the original one.

Just give me the fourth JJ Trek already.

Seems a bit excessive to develop a prequel while they’re still developing that one.

I would guess the movies will all be in Kelvin.

The 4th never got off the ground and was abandoned I thought

But it was the events of 2009 that caused the Kelvin branch so decades before would be... What?

The article in the OP states it’s still in-development.

Paramount removed it from their release schedule after a few directors dropped out and it wasn’t going to make that date, but there was a rumour last year that JJ might step in and return to directing it himself.

I don’t understand why it’s taking so long to get it together but I don't know why they would abandon it either. Paramount did market research that proved to them there’s still interest in a continuation.

I'd be down for another, I'm a fan of all 3 but I just can't see it happening. Beyond didn't do that well and it's been so long would the actors want to come back. Saldana is a much bigger star now. And Yelchin is dead.

Hopefully it'll be compelling because good Trek is good Trek. That said, I really would like the series to move into the future again. For more than a decade there's been a lot of living within the Enterprise-to-TNG-ish part of the timeline. I'd just really love something that feels fresher.

I agree that I would prefer they went decades into the future as opposed to the past, but a Star Trek film with a new cast of characters is exciting nonetheless.

Not too excited about, Seth Grahame-Smith writing.

I'll be honest. Would rather see a fourth film instead of going further back yet again. If JJ is indeed rumored to come back, then....

A 4th Abrams film would be great. If not, I wouldn't mind a movie during TOS timeline but with another starship and crew. Bob Wesley, Matt Decker, Ron Tracey, or one of the other ship captains.

A new Trek film is long overdue! I'll definitely be there.

4th Kelvin film or not, I'm just glad we're getting a new movie period.

Fascinating.

I wonder if they’re going back to the Romulan War story they had right after Enterprise was cancelled twenty years ago.

JJ’s first Trek movie was itself going back to a story idea that was twenty years old at the time, the abandoned Starfleet Academy prequel film pitched shortly after Final Frontier’s release.
