This is pretty exciting news, the first Trek movie without Kirk or Picard.
"Decades before 2009" would put it somewhere between Enterprise and Strange New Worlds. |

The article in the OP states it’s still in-development.
Paramount removed it from their release schedule after a few directors dropped out and it wasn’t going to make that date, but there was a rumour last year that JJ might step in and return to directing it himself. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=747 I don’t understand why it’s taking so long to get it together but I don't know why they would abandon it either. Paramount did market research that proved to them there’s still interest in a continuation. |

Hopefully it'll be compelling because good Trek is good Trek. That said, I really would like the series to move into the future again. For more than a decade there's been a lot of living within the Enterprise-to-TNG-ish part of the timeline. I'd just really love something that feels fresher.

Fascinating.
I wonder if they’re going back to the Romulan War story they had right after Enterprise was cancelled twenty years ago. JJ’s first Trek movie was itself going back to a story idea that was twenty years old at the time, the abandoned Starfleet Academy prequel film pitched shortly after Final Frontier’s release. |
