Thumbs up From Up on Poppy Hill coming in 2013!

Amazon Pre-order is now up with a release date of September 3rd, 2013.

From Up on Poppy Hill Blu-ray

Great news Studio Ghibli fans! It was just announced that From Up on Poppy Hill will be making its theatrical and home video debut in North America in 2013. This comes courtesy of GKIDS Films who confirmed the release on their twitter account.

Source

GKID's has announced that it will have over 3 hours of extras!

Quote:
The Blu-ray and DVD release of FROM UP ON POPPY HILL contains over three hours of bonus materials and includes: original Japanese language and English language versions with subtitles and dubtitles; feature-length storyboards; celebrity cast recording featurette with behind-the-scenes footage and interviews; an interview with Goro Miyazaki; original Japanese trailer and TV spots; the music video for the theme song by Aoi Teshima; and a featurette about Yokohama, exploring the history of the sea-side setting where the film takes place. Bonuses exclusive to the Blu-ray edition include a staff speech and press conference by Hayao Miyazaki days after the Fukushima earthquake; and a 20-page booklet containing the original project proposal by Hayao Miyazaki and a letter from Goro Miyazaki.

Quote:
Plot Summary: Umi Matsuzaka, the eldest sibling in a close-knit family of five, raises a pair of signal flags everyday at her seaside house in Yokohama Bay without fail in anticipation of the return of her father, who went missing in action during the Korean War. In school, Umi finds herself involved in a student movement seeking to prevent the demolition of an old club house. In the process, she falls in love with the newspaper club president Jun Kazama, only to find out that they might be related by blood.

Our college theater already has it scheduled for March '13, at the end of a Feb-March Ghibli-on-film retrospective to accompany it.
(Good thing I have free tickets. )

Bumping this thread since March 15 is coming up. I'm so curious as to what rating this movie will acquire on RT.. and of course, I'll finally be seeing it myself, too - if it comes to Europe theatrically as well.

Who's excited though? Any animation / Ghibli fans planning on catching it in cinemas?

Also does anyone have a source to confirm in how many theaters this movie opens?

I hope it plays in as many theaters as Secret World Of Arrietty did...I don't want to have to blow $15 on train fare to see it in Boston.

Hoping this plays near me, the family and I are excited about this. I love Ghibli films and my kid recently became obsessed with Arriety, so she is pumped about catching this in theaters as well.

Our area, with plenty of cineplexes, is getting it at the college Indie arthouse.
Add in that this technically isn't a Disney release, and, like Tales From Earthsea, you might want to start scouting out for local indie arthouses too. (First saw Spirited Away at the Waltham arthouse, that's a nice place.)

am watching the blu ray of this tonight,
got it in a trade, the hong kong version, and it's such a amazing movie.
a lot more serious then his other films, reminds me of whisper of the heart if anything
can't go wrong with studio ghibli though at all

just finished it and I though it was better then arrierty. In my mind one of the best studio ghibli films in a long time

Roger Ebert managed to review it, saying it was the "first time" he'd been disappointed in a Ghibli film (which technically isn't true, as he'd already thought Howl's Moving Castle was an unholy mess)--
Mostly for just being a slice-of-life picture with too much local appeal, and none of the "complex, baroque" characters you would get in a Miyazaki Sr. movie.

I can accept that this's basically Whisper of the Heart material, so I can take the culturally ground local-favorite story for what it is.

Oddly enough I went to see this Wednesday night, and it was one of the last reviews he posted. Review:

It is a rare opportunity to experience a Studio Ghibli release in theaters. From Up On Poppy Hill has been floating around Japan for a good while now, and fortunately, has finally landed in the States. In a genre where studios are constantly playing it safe—Pixar putting out sequels and Disney creating new princesses—Studio Ghibli continues to demonstrate that they still have the guts to go against the grain. Goro Miyazaki's second effort is risky in its simplicity, but pays off wonderfully in the same vein as Whisper of the Heart.

Poppy Hill is a gentle reminder that the past must be cherished as the foundation for our identity. Goro has crafted a charming and delicately told story with a fitting score and melancholic undertone. There is a mysterious depth to the characters that draws us emotionally into the story as the plot runs its course. It takes a questionable turn at one point, but blossoms into a poetic resolution. The film is a remarkable exhibition of the tradition and setting of Tokyo in 1964, through household dynamics, family structure, school-wide debates, and downtown Tokyo just before the Olympics. Its slow pace gives a restrained yet comfortable atmosphere, imploding with wonder.

From Up on Poppy Hill is not a landmark film, but continues the essence of Studio Ghibli’s quality. It is a brave and mature output that basks in the richness of its lead characters and extraordinary animation. Be prepared for an emotionally earnest story and sincere portrayal of adolescence.

I am really looking forward to seeing this film. I blind bought whisper of the heart and I thought that was great. As I understand it, this film is in the same vein. So I have high hopes I will really enjoy this one.

Hopefully Disney will release it here. Disney had nothing to do with the theatrical release of the movie here, but they have handled the home video release of every other Studio Ghibli movie that GKIDS distributed.

At this point, I just hope it gets a Blu-ray release here sooner rather than later. I have no interest in the Hong Kong release since I'm going to watch all Studio Ghibli films with the English dubs. I know some people would be against that, but the voice casts for all of their movies proves they go the extra mile to make sure they are of high quality.

You really should. They usually get decent voice actors/actresses.

I usually watch it in English first then in Japanese.
