I work in a High Quality A/V store, and we sell both Blu-ray and hd-dvd players. Every time I'm talking to a Customer about blu-ray vs. hd-dvd (ultimately, it is there decision, but they tend to listen to me when I tell them why Blu-Ray is better), he has a tendency to Interrupt and tell them to Buy Both, claiming it's a lot like Video games, you need to have both, to be able to get all the Movies you want.
If they say they don't want both, he tends to try and sway them towards HD-DVD, telling them how blu-ray has "Noise", and hd-dvd doesn't. He States that HD-DVD players are better up converters, making them a better Machine (Although he Loves the BDP-S1). Recently, He talks about how Universal and Paramount, together with Microsoft and Toshiba are More Powerful than Sony and "The Few Smaller Studios", and then Mentions that Toshibasoft payed Paramount off, and that he can Only Imagine that the BDA payed Warner off to join them, and that things like this Will be going back and Forth, again trying the tell them to Buy Both. Or If not, telling the Customer that Microsoft and Toshiba can Afford to pay more people off than Sony, (He also doesn't listen to the fact that there are Huge Numbers of CE Companies Supporting BD) even though Sony Had a Higher Revenue and Income than Microsoft last Year. I can Understand him wanting to sell 2 players instead of 1, more money for the Store, but when I'm telling a customer about the wonders of Blu-ray, you don't tell them that I'm Wrong and HD-DVD is Better. He Undermines what little Credibility we are allowed to have as Salespeople these Days, since we all know that Salespeople are to Rip you off, and steal your money *sarcasm*. He makes the people question everything Else I've Sold Them, especially wondering if the $3999 they just Threw at an XBR is worth it (it's not). After that Rant, my Question is, What movie should I be playing to demonstrate PQ in Blu-Ray? Currently Using Pirates 3, but only because it's open, I know this film is Horrible for Grain. It can't Be cars or Rattatouille, because people are generally stupid these days and Believe that a regular DVD looks the Same when it's a CGI. It needs to have Little Film Grain, if any (this is the "Noise" he refers to) and can't be too Dark, otherwise people think the TV is dark, and won't buy the Television, which makes us more money than 5 Blu-Ray Players. And What Can I say to Him to make him realize Blu-Ray is the Winning Format? PS. Telling him not to talk to My Customers Doesn't Work, he's a Lousy Boss, and an even Worse Person... As Soon as I get enough Money to Abuse my Discount and Get me My Totem Speakers and my 52XBR4, I'm Out of There. |

As for convincing him who is winning, just post a list of upcoming titles in both formats. One side is going to be a lot longer than the other. |

Tell your boss good business practices will earn him more customers. To sell poor quality products to customers will only have them be disinclined to shop from your store again. If you sell a product that people are really happy with they will keep on returning to you for everything be it audio cables or another AV unit.

All people care about (or should care about) is titles available - this is why they purchase a HD player. I would think just telling customers that over 70% of studios only support Blu ray should be enough to get a customer to purchase it - or at least not purchase HD-DVD.

Also, good business Practices don't really matter to this jack ass, People Come to our Store Because they hate Best Buy/ Future Shop. And with Good Reason, I used to work there, and hate the sales people. The Store is gonna get people no matter what, and the way he sees it, pushing one or ten out the door is a Minimal Loss, and he doesn't care |

If your boss doesn't tell them the current events he is dishonest and when the customers comeback pissed use your index finger point them over his direction or page him over and let him deal with the irate customer I guarantee you will be getting very soon.

Not worth it. Do what you need to do, buy what you can after you save enough, and find another store to work for. That store is likely not going to survive if your boss is as obtuse as you say he is.

Haha, I call him that All the Time, yesterday he told a customer that the BDP-S1 doesn't play DVDs, i looked at him, put my hand on ym forhead and just "Jesus Austin...Seriously...Just...God Damn it You're Stupid!"
But I think Planet Earth is a great Idea, we had this Australia Imax BD playing, and it was ok....but very boring....and I thought that Pirates Would Atleast hold Somebody's Attention |

Sadly people that are promoted to a position of any authority they feel they cannot speak any lies and nothing bad will ever happen to them. Since you probably cannot do anything about it wait until he has a p.o.'d customer come back for him, and then kick him while he is down. I don't have a problem with J6P that comes in and asks me pretty easy questions but when a person that works there and is supposed to know these things and doesn't care to learn more about the product, that's when I get pretty upset.
I'm a passive agressive person and when I need to set these people in their places I will just ask them simple questions I already know the answer to. As soon as they start fudging or making stuff up is when I'll show them the proof. It's the only way I've been able to get them to shut up. |

Blu ray's main benefit is studio support - you would be better off showing a movie that is not available on HD-DVD.

You can't win selling PQ. Customers can't grasp all of the nuances of one over the other in the short time they are in your store. No doubt either one is much better than anything they have seen before.
Instead, sell the studio support of Blu-ray, the future of Blu-ray, and you can also toss in that it happens to be better. It should be a very easy sell on that basis. You didn't indicate who "he" is, but if it's the store owner or manager and he wants to sell two players when it's not necessary, you might want to question the integrity of the company you work for. |

I suggest demoing the following... - Apocalypto - Kingdom of Heaven - Crank - Live Free or Die Hard - Casino Royale All have outstanding PQ IMO. |
