The Original is way better. Don't think I need the 4K for this.

I'm more a fan of remakes than most cause I can take each movie as it comes, but I remember not really liking this one. Denzel is always compelling though.

This one always felt underrated to me. Looking forward to picking it up next year.

Awesome! One of the few remakes that tops the original imo.

Great news (especially having watched the Kino 4K of the original a few weeks ago). Underrated remake, and it will look great with a fresh scan.

I have been picking up every single Kino UHD, many blind buys, yet this might be the hill I die on. This is such a poor remake.

I was wondering when this would get announced because it recently got upgraded to 4K on Vudu. The 4K stream looks like ass, but I'm eager to see how good it could look on disc.

Out of curiosity, is there an easy way to find out who approved of the master for this? I think it was mentioned in the iTunes thread for the DV version on there that due to DGA rules it has to be the director or someone close to them. I know Fujimoto is still alive but has been retired for some time now.. wonder if it was him or someone from Demme's estate?

I also had a plot related question for anyone who has seen the film recently.

[Show spoiler]When Marco is getting interviewed by the FBI agents, one of them in the background takes notes and observes everything that's going on. I'm assuming this is the same person who worked with Rosie and basically did the autopsy on Melvin. Later on in the film, she's seen with the General who castigated Marco when they're digitally changing the footage of Marco arriving at the convention. Was the implication here that the General/military actually recognized Marco was right or was he in league with the FBI the whole time?

I don't think the remake works overall, I think
[Show spoiler]giving most of the Laurence Harvey character's arc to the Frank Sinatra character (Denzel), making him the assassin at the end,
unravels most of the plot.

That said, the finale political rally is STUNNINGLY staged. I loved the use of the cheerful song "Better Things" as the campaign anthem, played as saccharine counterpoint to the dark events.

It was a clever reference to the use of "Don't Stop (Thinking About Tomorrow)" as the Clinton campaign anthem.

I shamefully admit to never having watched the original, but always had a soft spot for this remake!
The cast is outstanding and I love the paranoia atmospehere. Will definitely get this, providing it's a properly done transfer (including audio!). While I'm very happy with my pre-ordered Face/off 4K (tbh: given all the blurays available, that one couldn't help but be anything than a substantial upgrade!), I'm still going to hang on, until user reports come in!

Once bitten, twice shy, Kino!

I very much enjoyed this movie. I went into it blind, not having watched the original and therefore not using it as a comparison. And to be honest - I have no intention of watching the original, as I do not think Frank Sinatra is a good actor. His singing is amazing though as a musician/artist.

He's not a good actor in it, no. The plot with him and Janet Leigh is also awful and pointless and no one can convince me otherwise. However the movie succeeds mostly because of Frankenheimer's excellent direction and how he frames scenes and builds up tension. It's not a favorite of mine (not much from that era is, sue me) but it is effective.

That subplot is far from pointless, it's vital.
[Show spoiler]It's quite clear she's a CIA agent or some such tasked with keeping an eye on him. Their entire first conversation on the train is a series of non-sequiturs in code, and she keeps guiding him back to stay with the code when he makes mistakes. Then she's there to rescue him when he's arrested, and thinks it's perfectly normal, and then she's proclaiming her undying love in the next scene in a preposterous way that all feels like a show. She's pretty obviously a spy, at least to me.

I’m also a defender of this one. Recently watched it for the first time in years, really holds up with its bizarreness. Love the original and remake in this case.
