Default Disney Classics on 4K coming!

Little Mermaid, The Lion King and Wreck it Ralph could be released internationally around December...From The Digital Bits:

i was hoping real classics, Mary Poppins, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Old yeller, Absent Minded Prof, ok fine its a start. Maybe internationally an official release of Song of the South, which has been on most formats since VHS,Beta, laserdisc outside the US up to this point.

No need to worry. Eventually everything we’ve purchased in the past will be available again in UHD form. Anything they have reservations about releasing in the physical form will go to their streaming services. Once those reservations are alleviated and they see “oh, this movie/short/series has reached 15 million hits, (or whatever the magic number is) there is a market for home release!” Next they’ll remove said movie/short/series from their streaming service (a la Netflix) & let a year or so go by. Then, an announcement will be made. “1st time in 4K” “available for a limited time only” Joe Schmoe will say “oh I loved that movie/short/series I better purchase now because it’s gonna disappear again soon!” This is my theory. It’s the Disney “vault” policy all over again for the next generation. LoL.

4K on any of the older stuff would be surprising, but Wreck It Ralph feels obvious with the sequel coming up soon. If The Incredibles gets 4K when it was 8 years older, then WIR will definitely get one.

Hopefully 4K re-releases could mean the errors and noice reduction problems on the BDs of titles like Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella be corrected.

There are good chances they're doing a good job with the 4K editions, FOX as made a good 4K edition of Predator, compared to the poor HD release completely waxed by DNR... if you go to 4K you can't lower detail with DNR

Exactly what I'm hoping for if Disney doesn't disappoint us again.

Let me guess... they're going to use this as a way to re-release the Vault titles yet again, as a deluxe "Prestige Collection" version, right?

To be fair, they can...see Batman Begins.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned this yet but the Little Mermaid Blu-ray is a mess. Maybe they will actually create a beautiful transfer finally. I never noticed before when I was just watching it on my 60” or smaller TV, but now I have a 150” projector set-up and I could barely watch this with my 11 year old the other day. I have never been one who is super picky, but if you haven’t seen this recently, pop it in and look how bad the Blu-ray transfer really is.

Still would probably watch my 3D versions where applicable.

Maybe they will finally fix sword and the stone?

I assume you mean as a reference work! The 4K edition is a great improvement over the standard BD.

I'd be curious what the older/original Disney movies would even look like on 4K. Would they really be noticeably different than the bluray? Better color depth I guess?

I don't have The Little Mermaid on Blu-Ray, but I read someone point out that since it uses the same master as the canceled 3D re-release, the end credits list John Lasseter as an executive producer. The Lion King had references to the 3D conversion removed from the end credits of its 2D prints, so I'll try asking Disney to do the same with TLM (apparently they also threw the opening credits out of sync).

As I asked in the UK thread, where's The Black Hole? Lets see some of the stuff they haven't released yet on blu-ray before re-releasing the same animated films yet again on another format.

I already own The Little Mermaid and The Lion King in 3D and they're fantastic. I don't expect to be buying them on 4k discs. Perhaps Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty or Snow White or a few other classics, if they can get the color looking more like it should.

I realllllly hope that at some point they release versions that are very faithful to the theatrical versions, even just as a bonus feature. The digital clean-ups have generally looked very good, but there are some big alterations in the restoration processes they've used so far that make some of the films look very different than their original versions.

Edit: I don't know why I used the word "very" so much, but I'm too sleepy to change it.

It's an improvement, but it does have DNR here and there throughout the movie, which was his point. There's other UHDs with DNR issues too such as Terminator 2 obviously and also 3:10 to Yuma. It's rare but it happens.
