Default Retailers Comments on Blu: BB and CC

http://blogs.reuters.com/mediafile/2...conomy-hd-dvd/

Shapiro: Will the next-gen DVD war go on now that Warner Bros. has sided with Blu Ray?

Schoonover, Circuit City CEO: We are very excited to see progress of any type and we see this as significant progress.

Brad Anderson, Best Buy CEO: It makes it a lot easier to see the likelihood that we get to one format, and it makes it easier for us as retailers to help push it to that one format. It’s time to get that (problem of movies not being on one format or another) solved.

I like Best Buys comments much more. Could be taken as a bit of a hint. CC well, who really cares.

Yeah, both great comments, Besbt Buy's even moreso. Seems like both look forward to having just one format, and both seem to want to push it and make it bigger.

If anyone here works at Best Buy/CC, it would be nice to know if (and when) any internal notices come out regarding their support (i.e. shelf space, shipment of units, etc.). It would be very telling if the retailers begin to shift their high def allotments more and more to the blu side as time passes.

Walmart and Best Buy are in a position to bring Paramount and Universal on board very fast. All they have to do is announce they are no longer going to stock HD-DVD.

Yes. Just like the Blockbuster move last year sealed the ultimate fate of Weinstein. Blockbuster and Weinstein signed a four year rental exclusivity agreement in late 2006.

Soon after the Blockbuster move, Weinstein went MIA on HD DVD.

I hope all the retailers will force these HD-DVD studios to go Blu-Ray only and end the format war. I know these retailers don't want to have all these HD-DVD movies on their shelves collecting dust.

BB has always seemed like a Blu supporter vs. CC. Their sections have always favored blu as well as the end caps. CC has been a joke since day one and has always leaned towards HD DVD. Look at the sections they have and the amount of space given to the red team and it shows where thier support has been.

I agree about BB but in my area at least, CC is evenly split shelf-space-wise but the blu-rays are displayed on the front side of the aisle (more prominent). So, I'd give the nod to blu-ray at CC but I guess it must be dependent on the area (manager or whatever).

HD DVD software will move at a snails pace going forward. I doubt you will find an HD DVD movie anywhere in Best Buy come Christmas '08. I am just counting the days before HD DVDs show up in Walmart's $5.50 discount bin.
