I may pick this up. I remember seeing the play at a Theatre in Portsmouth. I liked it quite a lot actually.

I studied this in school too... never saw the film but loved the radio-recordings and the school production. (Again... I think I was alone in this)

Really nice piece of writing which keeps you thinking!

It's a small thing, perhaps, but does anyone know why they changed the name of the Inspector in the film version?

Anyone have any idea how much this is in HMV? I don't suppose by some miracle it's in their 2 for £25 promotion? I didn't pre-order because at almost £17 it seemed like a lot, but now I'm regretting it.

Directorial whim. Why ? Who knows. The use of Goole was supposed to imply that the Inspector was a supernatural entity who was wreaking his own form of amusement by tormenting the Birling family.

I think though it was Saturday that it was around £17 in HMV BAKA.

I think one can read too much into the name of Goole — the Inspector's behaviour wasn't ghoulish, for instance, and he didn't torment the family so much as call them to account for their actions. But it did add a frisson to the supernatural tone of the story.

I just wondered if there was a specific reason the name was changed — a known one, anyway. Because it seems like an odd thing to do, and it's not like "Poole" adds anything.

I'm actually tempted to see the play again at my local theatre, it's playing in January 2025.
