Default PS3 begins to overtake Xbox 360 in sales since launch

By the end of this year I think we're going to see the PS3 eat well into that year headstart the 360 had.

And the reason for this? (Okay, it is the fastest of all the consoles, but the reason for the big boost at this point..)

Blu-ray

This is without a single BIG breakout title like the 360 has many of. 2008 is the year the PS3 totally takes over the HD Gaming industry (i say HD since the Wii is a toy). Microsoft, welcome to the jungle.

Blu-ray, Europe and huge upcoming games.

Half of the PS3's announced upcoming titles aren't even contributing to the excitement yet. Wait 'til The Getaway, inFAMOUS etc are shown off properly.

Don't say Welcome to The Jungle....Now I'm gonna associate Microsoft with the G n' R Song, and I love that Song! I know it's not the first or only use of the phrase, but still....the song!

Anyways, I can't wait for this, I've had my friends fight with me over which is better, and now, when the PS3 finally kicks some ass, I'll win! Tho, to be fair, I never did lose an argument about the ps3 vs. 360, even when it came to customers. I once had this kid argue with me for 4 hours non stop about how the 360 is soooo great, then he went and played our ps3 demo...also, i got bored and started playing with his mind, and told him how a ps3 can control every computer in your house, and you refrigerator too. Also that it's a space heater....which is what I'm using mine for right now....i'm cold

I would be excited about this if you hadn't used VGChartz to provide the data.

they should bundle a 120GB PS3 with devil may cry 3 for 499.99, drop the price of the 80GB to 399.99 with a 3 free copy of POTC 1, 2, and 3 and have the 40GB for 299.99 with 50$ in PSN credit then they would blow away the 360 with these deals

They need to keep lowering the price, not raising it. A 120 gig PS3 makes no sense since sony actively encourages replacing your hard drive with a bigger one. And POTC is a very nice money maker for disney, better to have sony give away one of their bigger properties and let the studios profit to keep them happier. The PSN credit is a good idea tho.

Hmmm, 17 million Xboxes sold but only 10 million Xbox Live users. Of the 7M difference how many are faulty consoles rather than offline users?

I hope they continue to offer a deluxe model with SACD playback.

Its not a console as powerful a the PS3 which I just bought, but its not a toy. I play on the Wii as much as I do the PS3.

Nope, that extra bit of red was before the Warner announcement.

I think the Green line dropped off a bit because the ps3 became readily available at that point in time. Remember, the ps3 managed to sell as well as the 360 in it's first year despite going up against two competing consoles, when the 360 went up against none.

This year the 360 was selling far below what it was selling last year, up until the release of Halo 3. From the look of things, the ps3 will only sell better it's second year than it did the first (much like the ps2 and the ps1), and that's prior to the release of any really big games. Once Tekken 6, MGS4, and GT5 hit next year, the ps3 will begin taking off. I think Tekken 6 will start the trend (the Tekken series is the top-selling fighter after Super Smash Bros.), and MGS4 will be the real turning point. I think LittleBigPlanet will be a major hit with user-generated content, and that will keep things afloat until GT5 hits. I think GT5 will push ps3 sales above 360 Halo release levels (overall, not just the US), especially in Europe. After that, games like FFXIII and God of War 3 will bump up the ps3's sales even higher in 2009. Of course, all the while new IPs like White Knight Story and anticipated sequels like Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 will help things along. Of course, Killzone is a major wild card. If it ends up being great, Sony could market it like mad, turning it into as big a hit as Gears of War.

Of course, none of that includes the defacto exclusives in Japan: DMC4, RE5, etc. Those will sell tons of ps3s in Japan, but few 360s.

In the end, Sony employs more developers than MS and Nintendo combined, so MS just won't be able to compete from a software front. Sony will have far more 1st and 2nd party exclusives than MS because of it's in-house studios (Team Ico, Naughty Dog, Polyphony Digital, Incognito, etc.) and the independent studios it has exclusivity contracts with (Insomniac, Ninja Theory, Media Molecule, etc.). In addition to all of this, Sony is the only one out of the two with any real 3rd party exclusives left. Most 3rd party games are now multiplat ps3/360, but Sony still has a few biggies like FF, MGS, and Tekken exclusive to the ps3. The only 3rd party exclusives MS still has are small titles like Naruto.

The Wii kicks ass. I've been loving SMG.

As far as gaming goes, I use both consoles about equally, but overall the ps3 definitely has the heavier workload. Between gaming, Blu-Ray, media streaming, etc. it gets used quite a bit.

That 17 million (actually 17.7 last time I checked) figure is sold to retailers. Microsoft is pushing best case scanario on the public.

The wii was great the first three times I played it. But as soon as I tried to play Mario Strikers on it, it was all said and done. I HATE using that stupid controller and nun-chuck to play a game that isnt movement oriented like golf or tennis is. So far, the only game I really like on Wii is the golf game, thats it.

Ive owned a Wii, i thought it was pure garbage. The controls are nowhere near precise for action titles, the graphics are horrible and they still make games that are 4:3 and 480i. It does not belong in my house. Everyone has their opinion tho! Glad you are enjoying yours!

this is great...

people will buy PS3's and test the waters on what Blu-ray is all about...

and then they'll be more likely to purchase a standalone player because in the average household that has a PS3...the kid(s) will hog the PS3...

...genius..
