Default PS3 sales shoot ahead of Xbox 360 in Europe

PS3 sales shoot ahead of Xbox 360 in Europe

by Michael - November 5th, 2007 7:36am

Even the most dedicated of Sony fans will admit it's been an awkward few months for the home of PlayStation. Sales of the PS3 have been weak in comparison to the Xbox 360 and Wii, but things are looking very solid as the PS3 sees itself outsell its closer competitor, the Xbox 360, this month.

August and September were extremely strong months for the Xbox 360, with the double whammy of the Xbox 360 Elite and Halo 3 crunching the competition left right and centre. Things have settled down for Microsoft since then, and a number of smart moves on Sony's part has seen PS3 sales rise, especially in the European market, specifically the release of the cheaper priced 40GB PS3 a few weeks ago.

According to chart site VG Chartz, after the release of the 40GB console, PS3 saw sales rise from 5,000+ units a week in September, to 12,000+ units a week by the end of October. This sees sales of the PS3 being 10% higher than sales of the Xbox 360 in the UK and nearly 50% higher then sales of the Xbox 360 in the rest of Europe.

With crucial exclusives like Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Gran Turismo 5 and Home all due in 2008, and Sony's new Universe of Entertainment ad campaign broadening exposure of the console for the company even further, it looks like it could be a very eventual and profitable year for Sony.

And PlayStation Beyond will be right there as it happens....

You are right! The PS3 will win in the long run even though Wii won last year. More people around the world are preferring a PS3 over any other system because of it's bluray capability.

But not here in the U.S. it isn't. Funny, but I don't know a single person where I live (Michigan) who owns a PS3 except for me and because of that I purchased an Xbox 360 so that I can play with friends, people online etc. To me the 360 is better, it's less expensive, it also can play games at 1080P and there are way more games and better too. All the PS3 has for it is that it is Bluetooth and can play Blu-Ray movies. The games are disappointing and jerky, such as Madden 08 compared to the one for 360. I own both systems and really feel the 360 is better overall from a video game machine standpoint.

Perhaps for now, but..
All my friends have buy (for now, 4 of them + me) or will buy a PS3 cause we are wise enough to know that it will win in the long run (or at least never die) and we don't want to invest in 2 next-gen system. And the better, it has a blu-ray player. Don't want a defective Xbox that read dvd and plug a Hd-dvd with component (except for the elite..). When you are saying it's less expensive, you play online buddy?? cost that cost you some money.. Well there's a lot more than I could argue but I don't want to start a console war..

Hurray for Blu-ray!

i was hardcore sony fan-boy till the dreaded "Disk Read Error" after my 4th PS2 i was like to hell with it and bought my self a nice black xbox. from then on a swore microsoft. then bought the 360 on release had a heating issue so i bought another one and same problem with that. even bought the zune for the maker. then with the ps3 release i was pretty impressed with how sony was taking a loss on the system selling it for the prices they had it set and the components that is in the system (that info was from G4 tv). so here i am. so far my ps3 has not let me down even through 23hours of GHIII and GRAW2

That is too funny!

I was really looking for a dedicated Blu Ray player, but the capabilities of the PS3 and the reviews I have read have convinced me; the PS3 looks like an awesome machine (for $399 - amazing!), and I will be placing my order this week.

Actually this is not true. It depends on your setup but even then there is no 1080p source material for x360 and upscaling to 1080p is not the same as native 1080p.

That Vgchartz site reference kills all credibility to the article.

For those of you who don't know, Vgchartz magically has weekly hardware and software numbers from Japan and America, as well as weekly european numbers. They do not give out where they really get their numbers from, and their numbers are always wrong (they do update it after professional tracking numbers come out like NPD's). They refute numbers given by Manufactures and Publisher by saying "Those are sold to retailers, not consumers", even when the numbers are ridiculously off.

Vgchartz is a fan made site that makes up their numbers. If you go to some game forums and use vgchartz as reference, you'll be laughed at, if not banned.

Well, you are mostly correct. I believe there are a few simple native 1080p titles on the Xbox 360 like Virtua Tennis and NBA Homecourt. MS couldn't even make their biggest game for the 360 (Halo 3) a HD game! That tells me a lot about what that system is capable of. The X360 couldn't handle outputting the additional 200,000 pixels to make Halo 3 a native HD game (720p). And, that was NOT the first time it has happened with a 360 title.

It's clear which system is the MOST CAPABLE and give you MORE VALUE for your money. It is the PS3 in ANY form (20GB, 40GB, 60GB, or 80GB versions).

Wow. I didn't know Halo 3 wasn't really HD. Now I can use that against some of my friends who are X-box lovers.

While this statement is correct, the honest truth is that the difference in picture between native 1080p and upscaled 1080p is negligible. To be honest I wish more devlopers would upscale their games from 720p to 1080p instead of trying to make them run natively in 1080p. I think that is a happy medium between running choppy native 1080p titles and smoother but lower rez 720p titles.

The biggest problem is the ps3 still only has like 4 good games, i love my ps3 but as a game console first (which it is) it severley lacks, and every developer it seems talks down and poorly of how hard it is to program for. And all the games that are exclusive that i myself am dying to play have quite a while before they see the light of day, i think if anything comes out in 08 it will be year from now at best in ttime for next holiday season.

And for a good laugh. :-)

Well the 360 has been out for bout two years versus the ps3 (almost one year) so that alone could be the reason 360 has more games...games are jerky because they are half-a**ed ports...play a game MADE for the PS3 and keep the same judgment...Developers been using the dev kits for 360 for years...they jus need to stop slacking...

I'm sure they could've hit 1080p with Halo...I mean it may have taken a few discs...

Im an avid gamer and own all 3 system so im counting ps3 only games. And im a sony fan as i have over 80 ps2 games but the PS3 severley lacks (as do mos tthe first year) but saying it has more than 4 or 5 good games is a stretch. Theyre are to many hyped games that jsut dont deliver :cough: Lair :cough:

-Warhawk (online only but imo the best PS3 Game)
-Heavenly Sword (but can be debateable as its definatley not GOTY material)
-Ninja Gaiden Sigma (remade game from Xbox)
-Resistance (The best Stand Alone game at launch through now)

Until the exclusives i dont see this list getting much bigger. You could add R&C but it isnt everyones cup of tea. I am interested to see Drakes, and GT5 when it ever comes out.
