I still haven't unwrapped my Eureka Blu-ray I bought a while back.
It's my second least-watched Leone film and I could never quite take to it as much as his more famous works. But at least it's getting a 4K and I can upgrade. Can't help but think at the same time how great it would be to have Once Upon a Time in America on the format. |

I suspect this will be an SDR release of the IP that MGM have on hand. KLI did say, in the past, that they would consider an UHD if it didn't cost "an arm and a leg". I'm not sure if that meant the negative was bad condition or the Italian rights holders would probably ask too much for access.

If they are using the newest Cineteca di Bologna remaster with the wider framing, it will have to be completely regraded same as the others to kill the yellow tint and restore the proper colors. Interesting there was no mention of that, at least yet anyway.

I believe that was only a 2K master so hopefully this will be a new scan/remaster from scratch without any Ritrovata grading shenanigans.

They would have to license the masters from Kino (who did all the color regrading themselves), or else do their own re-grading. |

I'm in for this. And while Kino is working out their future 4k uhd westerns work slate from their prior blu ray releases, and are running out of Leone films to upgrade, I hope they also decide to rope in some Van Cleef and give us Death Rides A Horse 4k sooner than later.

The recent Cineteca di Bologna restoration was finished 2k from a 4k scan of the OCN. Kino probably got access to the raw scan files and doing their own grade from there.

I'm flabbergasted. Kino has said they really didn't care to touch this again and previously they tinkered with MGMs master and slapped on the AFOD title after it had finally been removed after decades and replaced with the proper DYS English title.
Eureka did restore a version of the English mono but was stuck with Kino's version of the MGM master which wasn't as good as MGM's original BD plus still had the same baked in cropping and color issues. I've seen MGM's 35mm print of their master and while it's better than all the disc releases it still has the same problems and the hideous remix audio is made painfully even more apparent. Plus Eureka had to cut both masters slightly for horsefalls. The Italian master is a mess which I tracked down the first BD of without the piss yellow color tint application which turned up on the reissues and Eureka was forced to use it. The film has needed an entirely new scan and proper research done for the correct audio in its best form and the history of the cuts and editions. Which no one has seemed to want to do. So where this "4K scan" is from I have no freaking idea. My guess would be that MGM scanned something in 4K and Kino picked up the rights. So this will likely be a 4K scan of MGM's flawed extended version possibly SDR only. I shudder to think what a 4K Italian master would belike given the hideous yellow they gave to the already pitiful master. I nicely asked Kino on Twitter when they posted this about what the source was and if any of the myriad of problems would possibly be finally addressed. Mostly because I was completely shocked at the announcement. Ignored as usual. |

With this and Once Upon a Time in the West, one hopes that Once Upon A Time in America can somehow be released from Disney's evil clutches for a 4K remaster and Blu-ray
