Default What makes PS3 good beyond the obvious

I am new to this forum and I keep reading from people referring the ps3 to a super computer or a media hub, etc. I understand its made for gaming and it has the blu-ray player. BUT, what is it capable of doing beyond the obvious? I am a non tech savvy person so I apologize for my ignorance.

Also, people keep saying that the ps3 is the BD to get, yet people say that if you want the ultimate in HD sound a stand alone is the better one to get? SOOO CONFUSED!!

"reading is good". That was a tad uncalled for. Instead of being somewhat rude, you could have mentioned I could have done a search and after 5 pages of threads I gave up looking. Thanks for your insightful answer.

Ok I gonna resume to you

You could want a standalone depending on your receiver because the older ones do not have HDMI input that can decode the newest sound encode (uncompressed PCM, dolby TrueHD and DTS HDMA). With a standalone, you can use the analog out to output these encode to the receiver, but it's the only way other than the HDMI connection. The PS3 has an HDMI output, but no Analog output. So it can prevent people that invest in an older Receiver to keep it if they go with a standalone.

For the PS3: you can

Play blu-ray
Play games (PS3, PS2, PS1)
Play music
Play video
Play SACD (for the 60GB and the 80GB)
See pictures (jpeg, etc.)
Is wireless
Has an internet connexion
Is profile 1.1 and is upgradeable to 2.0
Can stream music or movies that is on a PC
You can download movie trailers from the PS store

Edit: I forgot PSP connectivity

  • Plays PS1, PS2 and PS3 games
  • Is a web browser
  • Allows download of PS3 store content
  • Plays Blu-rays
  • Plays AVCHD dics (full and mini)
  • Can do video and audio chat
  • Is HD with everything basically
  • Allow streaming of media from your home computer

  • Supports keyboards
  • Uses Bluetooth for the remotes (sold separately) and the controllers
  • Can install Linux and use like computer

Best way to learn everything it can do is probably to check through the online manual:

http://manuals.playstation.net/docum...ent/index.html

But if that's too boring, I'll start off with DLNA:

DLNA lets you stream or copy music, video and pictures from your computer to your PS3. Your Mac/PC needs a program (like Windows Media Player 11 on PC) setup to allow the file sharing but it's a pretty straightforward process.

the ps3 is able to run linux, so you can use it practically like a pc if you want.

along with that you can use it as a media hub and stream the movies and pictures off your computer and on to your hdtv via the ps3.

you can help fight diseases with folding at home.

you can browswe the internet save movies and pictures to the hard drive and then view them on your hdtv. some cool slideshow features for the pictures.

great to listen to music on.

best upconveter for dvd ive ever seen.

on top of that its a blu-ray player and a game console.

videochat or just audiochat to your friends.

the reason people are saying that about the sound is the ps3 cannot decode dts-hd ma and it doesn't bitstream truehd, if you are an audiophile don't go with the ps3

Not being able to bitstream truehd shouldn't matter since the PS3 can decode truehd internally. I agree that not being able to decode DTS-HD MA yet is probably the reason people knock it down a notch when talking about HD audio though.

For now. This could change with a software update, so I wouldn't let that be a deal breaker. The other benefits far outweigh this in my opinion.

More stuff to come too!

Lots of nice new feature if you are already a PSP owner. Movies & PS1 gams on the go. Remote control of the PS3 anywhere in the world.

The DVD upscaler is gorgeous. I can say that because I havent seen any other upscalers in action, so I am blown away by it.

Also, depending on what type of games you like, the small games up in the PS Store are great. I've bought a bunch of games on the PSN compared to the two I have bought (and never played much) on my 360. (Although there are a couple recent 360 Arcade titles that I am considering.)

But yeah, I find PSN's 'arcade' titles much more casual and relaxed.

Another great thing about the PS3 is the easily upgradable hard drive. I think its just one screw, and pull. They actually have instructions for doing this in the manual, which I find pretty cool.

And of course, networking to stream your audio from your PC is great too.
