I just read an article last week about classic movies that reviewers panned and now go back on there thoughts. I think it referenced Ebert hating 'The Shining' and now realizing his mistake.
Anyone else had these types of thoughts. I remember not liking Blade Runner on my first viewing... and then I read all the hype about it, gave it another shot and loved it. Anyone else had such experiences? |

It only sort of applies, but I remember the first time I tried watching 300, I made it about 1/3 of the way through and it bored me to sleep. Literally. I gave it another go about a year and a half later and actually found myself enjoying it.

I've watched, what many are considered, "bad" movies and for some reason I've always enjoyed them. I remember thinking Naked Lunch (the movie) was very strange until I learned it was really about William S Burroughs life, not just a novel he wrote, that I've never read.
How about this... Was "Howard the Duck" and "Killer Clowns from Outerspace" bad movies? I enjoyed them. I don't think I ever straight up hated any movie. |

Evil Dead II. Hated it as I didn't appreciate the humor (plus I had watched it back to back with Dawn of the Dead for the first time, which had a much more depressive tone). But I loved the original and Army of Darkness, so I returned to it a few years later and absolutely loved it more and more each viewing. It eventually became a top ten favorite.

There Will Be Blood. watched it when it first came out, didn't know what to think and thought it was boring and didn't see what all the fuss was about. i was a naive viewer. since then, i've watched and learned a lot more about films and the craft. now it is my 2nd favorite film of all time right under 2001: A Space Odyssey

300. Saw it opening weekend, hated it. I ended up seeing it on IMAX and thought it was the greatest thing ever put to screen. (Not really, but I have liked it from that point on.)
TRON. I didn't care much for it, but after seeing the sequel I really enjoy it. |

![]() There is one I need to re-visit sometime... I could barely sit through it on my first watch... I want to give it another chance. King Kong for me... I didn't like it when I watched it in theaters... then my buddy had it on Blu... watched half it and realized I really do love it. It is really long and drawn out but I think I like that.... |

One off the top of my head: Final Fantasy: the spirits within.
Initally I thought it was crap, but that was mainly down to my mood since I wanted to go and see JP3 instead, but after rewatching it I actually think it was a good film with CG ahead of its time. |

"Hated" is too strong a word for me but here are films that I was pretty lukewarm on at first but now love. Coen brothers make the list twice!
The Big Lebowski O Brother Where Art Thou? Land Of The Dead Dawn Of The Dead ('04) Mad Max Predator 2 Pulp Fiction Blade Runner (first exposure was the 90s Director's Cut. Never rewatched it but I love the Final Cut) |

I walked out of Eyes Wide Shut shaking my head and watching it a couple years later on DVD didn't change much. But I had the chance to grab the BD pretty cheaply and I'm glad I did.
There was more there than I at first (or second) thought. |

Right there with you on Lebowski and Pulp Fiction. Death Proof was a different animal for me, though. The first time I didn't really mind all the endless bar-scenes of obnoxious characters sitting around yammering, since my expectation was that characters were being established for the rest of the film. The second time I could barely tolerate all that again.

I didn't hate any of these films when I first saw them, but my reaction was along the lines of 'That's it?' However, re-watching them made me appreciate them much, much more.
American Beauty A Clockwork Orange Donnie Darko Psycho Shallow Grave Taxi Driver It's interesting that you list this. I watched this for the first time not long ago and was disappointed by it. I wonder if I'd like it a lot more if I saw it again. |

While I certainly don't hate it, I too have tried to absorb the depth and mysteries that so many speak of but the film does tend to bore me. It is beautiful and obviously influential but I just can't seem to "get into it".

The only movie that comes to mind is the first Harry Potter movie. I took my god daughter to see it wasn't a fan, took a nap. I watched Saturday night with my kids & the Mrs. & it's pretty good. Looks like the box set wasn't just a purchase for them after all.
