Question Superman 2: The Richard Donner Cut has an extended version?

So I recently bought the RDC of Superman 2 on vudu. Everything was going good till I notice something. There were scenes that weren't a part if it before. I plugged in my bluray of the film and the scenes werent there.

One new scene being the arrival of the three villians in the small town. Ursa beats guy at arm wrestling. Zod throws guy through wall. Non kills little boy. In the bluray, the arrival is skipped and goes straight to the military advancing on them.

I know its not an entirely new scene but some was either seen in the Lester version or was in the tv cuts. But the footage looks remastered and the kid has been dubbed over by a less high pitched voice.

There were a few other scenes or shots that are not on the bluray.

So the bluray according to here and the disc, is 116 minutes long.
While the digital version is 122 minutes long
6 minutes longer than the disc.

So did Warner Bros mess up and put up the wrong version of the cut on digital or is it the other way around?

That's interesting. I can tell you that the "mistake" was definitely in the digital version though, as the scene of Nod killing the boy would absolutely NOT be in the Richard Donner Cut. It was a deleted scene from Lester's cut, and Donner specifically mentions it with distaste somewhere in the extras.

It looks like they must have just made a new extended version of the film on Vudu or something.

I forgot to mention that this probably isn't just vudu.

If you search up Superman 2: The Richard Donner Cut 122 minutes, you will get a list of websites with digital downloads of this version available.

Even youtube has it.

I'm a little curious if this is what they've been showing on cable for years. I remember that in 2010 Donner Cut was what was shown for Superman II on AMC. I wonder if they didn't pad the movie slightly to meet TV standards for content per hour, and that's what we're seeing on Vudu. There's often a connection to what Warner gives Vudu and what they distribute for cable (unfortunately in the area of aspect ratio, so many scope Warner movies 1.78:1 on Vudu, though not Supes 2 Donner).

From a character standpoint I can see Non doing this. They were hurting little children on Krypton weren't they?

But yeah, it feels cheap and unnecessary. And it's not directed very well.

I have the Restored International Cut which painstakingly put the longest TV version of the movie back together, and it includes the killing of the kid, along with the awful bit with a distraught Beth Porter missing the game on TV.

This was only ever available to the select few on DVD, so unless the copy you've seen on Vudu was an unauthorised construct from that, I'm stumped as to what the Hell the copy you have seen was.

The scene where the kid is killed was also in the ABC televised longer version.

Yep, certainly was. The Restored International Cut is a remastered version of the movie from when it played on Canada's Channel 12, which was the longest cut of the movie, more so than even the one which premiered on ABC. Ireland also saw the long edition played on TV in the 90s, as did Australia.

I was part of the (almost) militant group of fans campaigning to get a restored version of Donner's material released, and the RIC was used as a tool for generating interest in the project.

Whatever it is it's definitely part of what is hosted on Vudu and elsewhere as the Donner cut, in scope/HD no less.

The Donner Cut -- featuring the worst discarded scenes from the Lester cut!! Now including more slapstick from the Metropolis battle! LOL

As far as I am aware no; the Brando footage was not put back until the Donner cut.

Here is a link to an in depth review of the Restored International Cut and the differences with the theatrical version.

One of the multiple things that turn me off about streaming is these weird anomalies you can't do anything about. Donner hated that scene yet here it is in the Donner cut thousands of people own.

Thanks!
I'm wondering about this too. That newly added scene is not 6 minutes long, so what else have they included in this version?

I know that Warner replaced the "WB" title card that's at the beginning of the digital versions of Superman The Movie earlier this year. But based on this it appears that's not all they did. Huh. Very interesting.

Having worked on the Anchor Bay Edition of SUPERGIRL I became friendly with the film's Producer, Ily Salkind. Years ago I had suggested that he over see a complete restoration for Blu-ray for both SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE & SUPERMAN II. This would be a complete re-edit for both film to be edited together with ABC seen footage into SUPRMAN: THE EPIC. Ilya liked the idea and made an appointment for a meeting with WB, however - during the luncheon the WB Exec told him of how odd it was that he heard from Ily since they had just completed a re-edited edition of SUPERMAN II - the Donner Cut.
Having had already spent money on that they weren't going to do what Ilya was ready to suggest. Prior to that Donner had gone ahead and re-edited the original SUPERMAN film without Ilya's permission or aid. Ilya had sued WB, and won, over that since contractually he held the rights to any edit of the film. WB paid him, but Ilya wasn't going to stop anyone from seeing the new Donner cut - thinking of the fans.
The ABC editions were over seen by the Salkinds at the time. Since a two night airing would bring in more money via sponsors.
The same was true for all Salkind production with longer edition for TV airing. SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE and SUPERGIRL. The longer edition that Anchor Bay had put out was indeed a syndicated edition original made for TV.

A blu-ray of the Restored International Cut (the version I grew up with, as I was also part of that campaign that helped the Donner Cut see the light of day) would be the absolute tits. In fact, I think WB should give S2 the same treatment they gave Blade Runner (4 versions of the film in one set):

BD 1: Theatrical
BD 2: Donner Cut
BD: RIC cut
BD 4: Fan edit that combined the BEST footage/takes/audio cues/line readings from all 3 versions, edited by Selutron (look him up on youtube).

Btw, is this Hulu version in HD by any chance? That would be helpful to certain fans like myself that like to take the various cuts of S2 and......have a little fun with them on our computers

I just checked all of my digital copies. On iTunes and in Flixster, its run time is 1 hr 56 mins, the same as the original DVD and Blu-ray.

On Vudu, however, it's the (new?) 2 hr 2 min version. The version Amazon Digital is selling and the version you can rent on YouTube are also the 2 hr 2 min cut.
