Default 'Elton 60' BD PQ

This is not a thread where somebody asks about the quality of a particular BD. This is a thread where praise is given where it is deserved. For the longest time I have used the following list as reference material for visual quality on BD:

DOCUMENTARY = Galapagos
ANIMATION = Cars
LIVE ACTION = Pirates 2 or 3

I have now come to the conclusion that the first and only title that I will focus on when showing the power of Blu-ray is Elton John's 60th b-day concert at Madison Square Garden. OH MY GOD! Does this thing look beyond stunning! I would actually say that it is the LIVE ACTION FOOTAGE equivalent to 'Cars'!!! That is how clear and crisp the image is. Every rhinestone is impeccably noticeable! They should be using this in stores to demo Blu-ray. I think I felt a touch of insanity at some point from being confused as to whether or not I was actually in New York.

I agree with you that the Elton 60 disc is in the very top tier of PQ for Blu-ray discs. A very good audio track as well and a great show!

I love Elton, and I'm not even gay!! He is just a good, talented songwriter and great pianist. Excellent modern musician. I will probably pick this up eventually!

I agree. He is one of the last great songwriters of his era to still be around. Tiny Dancer is my favorite song, every time I hear it I think of the bus scene in Almost Famous.

Booya! +1!!!

I also love "Your Song". 'Moulin Rouge' kicks serious @$$! Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman...

I have a BD30 and it is hooked to my Proc via Coax Audio. My sound choices are all set to Bitstream.

I keep looking and do not see any 5.1 DD or 5.1 DTS tracks on this disk? Is that correct? If so, will I get 5.1 anything, or will my Proc just go into ProLogic II? That sure is not what I am looking for but I guess that is why they invented Netflix!

TIA

That's an excellent question. I'll check on it when my roommate is done with the TV and get back to you.

Hmmm... it appears that there is only PCM 2.0 and PCM 5.1 available on this release. Not sure how that would be affected by your setup. Perhaps you could ask in the Audio Insider Thread. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...=audio+insider

That would be Bernie Taupin (who makes an appearance). Elton is a great singer/performer. Bernie gave EJ his voice.

The disc is pretty damn good all around.

Yeah you would have to do Pro Logic II or just stereo if you don't have an HDMI receiver.

Thank you All:

That is BAD! My Meridian Proc does not have HDMI or 5.1 analog in. I wonder why they only have PCM on this disk?

That is a very good question... especially considering that there are no bonus features on the disc. So, I don't think that it had anything to do with space issues.

Well, I will see what happens when I get it from Netflix. I did, however, buy the Queen BR and am anxious to play it. However, I understand the PQ is not nearly as good as Elton. It looks like my sound on Elton 60 will not be that great after all!

So enjoying an artist has more to do with their sexual proclivity than their art? I'm a fan of Queen. Who knew, that I should have been gay? I enjoy Ellen Degeneres. Wait? Dory is gay? I'm not gay, how can I enjoy this...

The video quality is spectacular. I also picked up Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds at RC. The video is also very good, but the audio was even better than Elton. Tough choices. I prefer Elton's music, but his voice is certainly not what it used to be. The Dave Matthews disc just blew me away, sonically.

Dave Matthews isn't gay, is he? Cause I enjoyed that disc too.

I'm thinking of getting this one but... Are songs accompanied by an orchestra? If so, then it's a definite buy.
