One of Bava's best with a great performance from Christopher Lee. Review is up at http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/dvdre...d_the_body.htm and it looks very much darker than the DVD versions.
I did check for an existing thread before posting this but couldn't find one Last edited by Scottie; 02-10-2017 at 06:41 AM. |

Once again, Kino puts no extras on there (outside of the Lucas commentary). Not even a trailer??? C'mon, Kino. However, I'm glad they included more than just the Italian dub this time around. One step forward, one step back. Then again, I don't think this is a Alfredo Leone title so that might explain the additional dubs being included...
Darker? Yes. I'd guess this is more accurate. It makes more sense given the film takes place at night for the most part, and the new caps make the old look brightened rather than it making it look like the new is too dark. |

Looks very good, I must say. I still think I will wait and see what Arrow will do with this, though. But I am happy to see Kino included both dubs and english subs for the (better, more atmospheric) Italian dub. Looks like I can finally get rid of my German DVD.

Coincidentally I just cancelled my preorder from Amazon for this today after placing it a couple of months ago. As much as I want to see it, the bare bones effort of Kino has turned me off....especially after seeing the treatment Arrow gave to Black Sabbath in the UK. I'll wait to see if they have any plans to release this before biting the bullet.

This is a very interesting Bava, and I'd love to see the Kino Blu-ray. Bava's bold use of color is evident even in the relatively low def of the VCI. Imagine those greens and ambers would really pop on the BD.

It's described there as being the same garbage master but gamma boosted, so you get either a black or gray version of the same thing. Sounds like it's a toss-up. |

No editions are good. Someone needs to go back and do a new scan or else access the original files for correct colors. Every single bd is an abomination.

Yup, after watching the Kino I went right back to the German DVD. I think the only other movies I've decided never to watch the BD again over the DVD are a couple of the Female Prisoner Scorpion movies.

They tried to improve it for the UK release but unfortunately Pinewood can't seem to grade well and just introduced other issues. This has been a bugbear of mine on several Odeon/Screenbound releases, the colours are just off when Pinewood have had their fingers on it.

The Kino is too dark. The light and dark values are drastically out-of-balance and the
blue is over-saturated to an absurd degree. It may be sharp, but what advantage is that if the darkness and black crush hide the texture? Keep the Kino for the commentary. Watch the German DVD for the picture. There's no comparison. It obliterates the Kino: I bought five different editions of The Whip and the Body to find the right one. The German e.m.s. DVD is the right one. It comes in this slipcase, but not always: An International Guide to Mario Bava on blu-ray Last edited by Richard--W; 05-06-2019 at 12:53 PM. |

I just looked at screen caps on DVDBeaver and see what you mean about the darkness and blue tint of the Kino disc.

The screen captures only hint at the difference. I wish I had bought the e.m.s. DVD first and spared myself the expense of the other editions. Also, I should emphasize, the PAL speed-up is noticeable but only slightly, and not severe as it can be on region 1 players. So on every level the e.m.s. DVD is the one to get. It's out of print and pricey but worth it. |

Arrow, are you listening?
The Kino BD is a crime against arguably Bava's greatest film. |
