Default HD DVD/Dreamworks Commercial American Idol

Just saw a commercial during American Idol with a Dreamworks executive spouting the True High Definition with HD DVD. It was a commercial for Shrek and other HD DVD's. Utilizing the animated donkey from the movie. Just curious why Dreamworks would do such a thing? I know they are HD exclusive but this flies in the face of all the rumor about them coming back to blu!

i dont watch american idol but this could actually be smart marketing by the people over at the DUD camp. MILLIONS on top of MILLIONS of people watch this show. They could be connecting with audiences fast this way!

They have to spend that marketing money from Toshiba somehow.

They are HD DVD exclusive until they aren't. That's just how it works.

That was exactly my thought. Blu needs to get in on this advertising. Stop messing around and drop the hammer on these people once and for all!

This commercial was around before Christmas. It is not new. I am sure Toshiba is going to use it as much as it can.

Those spots weren't cheap either. If they bought ahead of time it cost around $780,000 per 30 second spot. If they were late to the game and just recently bought the ad time it ran around $900,000 per 30 second spot.

They may have bought them ahead of time. The spots are old. The spot shows nothing buy old releases. Shrek, Bourne, etc.

Note that commercials on TV shows are bought MONTHS in advance
This commercial doesn't mean anything to me. I've seen it. They'll come back to Blu eventually

Not always. There were plenty of ad spots sold just days before the show aired. The writer's strike created higher demand as well since Idol's viewership was guaranteed to be the top runner of any show in the past couple months and perhaps since the last time it was on the air. The HD DVD airtime could have been bought post CES as part of that rumored 'new marketing blitz' that they said they would do. Being such short notice they probably just pulled their old ads since in reality those are the only high profile titles they have on the format.

In either case, they are just pissing away money. I say let them.

Yeah, I was a little saddened to see that ad and all the potential poor misguided souls. That show really draws in the masses.

But I actually had a decent conversation about it on AVS (yeah, I know, I know)... Never once did I mention Blu, but just some interesting questions and often ended with a

... because they're gonna need all the 's they can get when all they can do is as the dud releases dry up in the coming months.

Heck, a few more for good measure ,

no worries, when they come to the shop, they might well brought home BD player, as they see none of HD DVD around, or get explained by the shop assistant that HD DVD is losing
