...Ellen DeGeneres.

I guess she broke the news while filming the first episode of her talk show's new season.

Seems like a good replacement for the spot left open by Paula Adbul. A female judge who will never say anything bad, and will actually go out of their way to find something positive to say about every performance.

I'm not sure how she'll fit in with the other judges, but I guess we'll see (because, yes, I secretly watch this show fairly often when it's on).

Wow...really shocked about this....never expected Ellen. I guess I was secretly hoping Paula would come back and they would get rid of Kara or whatever her name is.

What does American Idol have to do with music? It's more of a popularity contest than a singing or musical-ability contest, so I don't think Ellen is really all that out of place.

The success of her show implies she is doing something right, and may know more about what people are interested in than we realize.

My concern (if I can even call it that, since I don't really care) is that she might be too big for the show, and may be a distraction instead of blending into the judges panel.

In any case, I think it's definitely an upgrade over Paula Abdul, who was no longer contributing anything to the show. Her fights with Simon were funny or cute the first time, but over time became really annoying.

... I don't like being insulted, feeling like I could potentially know more about music then the judge, at least with paula she'd been in the business.

But at the least she should provide some decent one liners.

I only watch the parts where they wreck peoples dreams lol, but they aren't mean anymore so its gotten way WORSE.

Ultimately the show is about ratings, and if she brings ratings, then it was a good move.

She doesn't have to know anything about music to make the show more entertaining, so I'm fine with her as a judge.

Paula's cheat-sheet

So if Ellen is replacing Paula (which she is), her role is to be the guaranteed-positive judge, and her comments will likely have nothing to do with the music. And even if she does want to criticize the music, it shouldn't matter.

I'm not a professional musician, but I can say that I don't like a particular song. I'm not a director, but I can say I didn't like the direction in a particular movie. All that matters is whether the person being critiqued respects the opinion of the person doing the critiquing, and in this case, I think everyone will respect what Ellen has to say, in the rare event that she might say something negative.

I agree that it is more about ratings then anything. This may be a thing that will help the Idol from dropping down in the ratings.

I think she's hilarious and very, very talented. She will bring something no one has before, which is rip-roaring laughter. After all, isn't this a Comedy Show anyhow?
