Default When do you give up on a movie being released on Blu-ray?

I feel like a few I have been waiting years for are never going to happen and I should just rebuy them on DVD..

Which ones are you thinking of? You know the minute you buy the DVD there will be an announcement for the blu-ray.

When they're more than 25 years old and directed by James Cameron.

...that's when you know it wasn't meant to be.

I thought for sure Universal was going to release the Invisible Man Legacy and Creature From the Black Lagoon collections in time for Halloween. Since they didn’t, I decided not to wait and just get the dvd sets. It’s frustrating, but at least I get to watch the movies for Halloween.

I’ll just sell them when the Blu-rays eventually do come out.

I figured never in a million years would a TV show such as seaQuest DSV get a Blu-ray release... it wasn't even on my radar of hoping it could somehow happen. And yet it did. So the answer is never give up!

I almost never give up. When films like PRIVATE PROPERTY (1960) and RAT FINK (1965) can show up on Blu-ray, just about anything else can as well.

There are two films that I don't expect to see on Blu: THE ABYSS (due to dithering by either James Cameron or Fox), and GIRLS TOWN (1959). Nobody seems to know who actually owns GIRLS TOWN: Warner? Republic? Paramount? Lionsgate?

I would love Critters and Maximum Overdrive. Always good to keep a lookout on the foreign market too, if you're region free capable.

Because I want some movies in my collection and I'm starting to think they are never coming out.

Not until blu-ray is officially a dead format, which people have been calling for at least 6 or 7 years now. It seems we still have years of life left, nowhere near the go-go days of DVD, but enough to keep growing the catalog bit by bit.

There is no way we will get 100% coverage of what was on DVD, but I'm amazed at some of the titles that have been coming out. I don't feel any particular title is "hopeless", even those that are tied up in rights hell.

Of course it's equally amazing we are still missing major, and somewhat recent titles like Panic Room, The Abyss, True Lies..but we'll probably get those. They may even go to UHD imo, it would actually make sense to bring them to UHD since there is pent up demand for them. I'm more worried about some of the early classics. Warner at least helped us a bit with their Bogey and Hitchock titles from Warner Archive last year, and Sony spit out a few Capra classics from their Columbia catalog. But I wish there was so much more. The concern with those is whether they are even being archived in 4K (or at least new 2K scans) before the film elements decompose.

I have John Huston's "The Dead" on dvd from Italy, that looks like a vhs upscale. I tossed the dvd case and keep it in the American dvd case for the botched release that was missing 10 minutes. I've given up hoping to see it land on Blu Ray. Even though it's right in sweet spot of Criterion's wheelhouse.
