Default PS3 Has Better Audio Out Than Any Blu-Ray Player

This according to the saleswoman at my local best buy. I was looking for a Blu Ray player and the 2 I were interested in were sold out. She said I should just get a PS3 because it has better audio. Does that make sense to anybody? How could a PS3 have better audio out than a blu ray? I could understand equivalent, but better???

BTW: I got the Panasonic DMP-BD30K and love it.

Does the BD30 do TrueHD decodes? I think the sales lady might have been right about the audio. What receiver are you pairing the player with?

Edit - If you love it, that's what really matters. I prefer standalones for the PQ, the quiet, the control, the cool, and the look.

PS3 definitely doesn't have the best. No way of doing DTS-MA at the moment, and no uncompressed multichannel analog out either (I think that's how to say it).

Don't believe salespeople

The Panasonic DMPBD30 has better audio than PS3 I believe. If you have an HD Decoder capable receiver than the Panasonic will create even better audio in my opinion.

it would be better than Sony's bdp-s300 in that it can decode DolbyTrueHD in player and output it via HDMI. But this would require you to have an HDMI audio capable receiver.

The bdp-s1, bdp-s500 can do this as well as being able to output it over analogs (5.1) to older receivers.

I found this tidbit on cnet:

Quote:
Panasonic's DMP-BD30 is one of the first Blu-ray players that can output both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks in bitstream format, to be decoded by compatible receivers. This feature is a boon for audiophiles, as there is currently no Blu-ray or HD DVD player on the market able to decode DTS-HD Master Audio internally, and only some Blu-ray players are capable of decoding Dolby TrueHD internally (every HD DVD player, on the other hand, can). Both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio are losslessly compressed audio formats, which means that the playback on your system should be identical to the digital master and should, with the right equipment, sound better than standard Dolby Digital and DTS. A
As far as receivers, I'm still shopping around. My budget is about $400-$450. I'm looking at some harmon kardans. But I've read both good and bad reviews on them. I'm not really sure which direction to go. Any advice?

Try searching here for Onkyo TX-SR605 (although that might not be the exact model number). I think it's in that price range and a lot of people here seem to like/recommend it.

At under $500 the Onkyo line offers plenty of features and nice sound.
If you decide to spend more I would recommend you check out the Denon brand.
The 2308ci can be found for under $650 inc. shipping from online retailers.

Most Best Buy employees know very little about the products they're selling. Your experience is not atypical.

I just installed one of those Panasonic BD players yesterday. I love how fast the unit powers on compared to the BDP-S300. I still digg the PS3 for it's faster start time and being upgradeable.

The PS3 may not yet have some of the newest audio output options, but it still does great audio for probably about 95% of all systems out there. And the machine does so much more than just play discs, so if you care at all about the beauty of having a multi-purpose media machine, get the PS3.

The only things the PS3 can't do audio wise is Bitstream and DTS-MA. Now if it were capable to do these, an update would nice *cough* Sony *cough*. Maybe it will with a Profile 2.0 update mentioned at CES.

A firmware update that allows for internal decoding of dts-HD MA would be just what the doctor ordered. But as it has been said before, the PS3 can not output anything above stanard dolby digital and dts via bitsream due to hardware limitations.

Here's a simple question, but I'm just looking for confirmation. Can the UK 40 gig PS3 decode Dolby TrueHD?

I just picked up a January 2008 issue of What Hi-Fi? magazine, and while they loved the PS3, they gave it 4 out of 5 stars for audio. The reason given was that doesn't have audio codecs for Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master HD. I hate it when publications mess up stuff like that.

I'm writing the editor to get the review corrected to reflect the PS3 accurately. I have a US spec. PS3, so I just want to make sure the UK 40 gig model also decodes Dolby TrueHD.

Please let me know quick, so I can hit send.

Thanks

its not gonna matter, its a myth when people say the receiver does a better job at decoding than the ps3 that kind of talk couldint be further from the truth. the other day i was comparing casino royal's dolby digital 5.1 track from the receiver to the ps3 changing between bitstream and pcm, and the ps3 did a way better job at decoding it than my onkyo. it was more clear and crisp, wile the onkyo sound muffilled and low. the same 0011100 from the receiver your gonna get the 0011100 from the ps3 to. people just want to see the truHD and dtsHD master audio light up on their receiver's. its the same data in the end.

Whoa brrrroseph I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one. This DEFINITELY depends on you receiver. I'm sorry that your Onkyo does not decode as good as the PS3, that is unfortunate for you. But, any high end receiver like a Denon 2808 and up or Elite VSX91 and up or an NAD(pretty much all of them) or Marantz or.....well I could go on. The point is, yeah if you spend around the same amount on your receiver as, or maybe a little bit more than, you did on your player yeah the player probably has a better decoder than the receiver. But, spend 1k+ on your receiver(which not everyone can do unfortunately) and the receiver will destroy your player in terms of decoding, assuming said player is PS3.

i paid $730 for the 705 and i think its pretty high end for what it can do. what you said might be true about the higher end receivers, i dont know i just got into this HD/hometheater world. but the point im trying to make is i dont think having the ps3 decode dts-hd or trueHD is a bad thing, if you can tell me why it is... please do i want to be enlightend.

Decoding will be the exact same in the player/receiver.

...what happens to it after it has been decoded is the real difference between player vs. receiver audio quality.

no im pretty much saying that there could be a difference between how the Reciever handles Linear PCM (decoded in player) vs. Bitstream (decoded in receiver)...are DSP's applied the same to each, is bass management an issue? etc

I personally think this topic leads no where...Lossless audio is fantastic any which way you hear it.

Until any real blind testing and what not is conducted, its always going to be one oppinion vs. another.
