Default Game resolutions on PS3?

let me first explain my setup, sharp lc46d64u, ps3, hdmi. this is the first hd set that will display incoming resolution, so this is a newly found oddity to me. old setup was a 51" sony hd crt. I'm playing assasin's creed which according to the display info on the cover has a max res of 1080i. when i play it, it plays at 720p. cod4 has a max res of 1080p and when i play it, it plays at 720p. the only way i play these games in thier max res is by changing the availible res on the ps3. am i missing something or is this the norm for all ps3 games? iv'e only noticed this recently since i did not have resolution info on my display before.

You old tv may have only done 720p so the ps3 may have only allowed up to 720p.

You need to go into the setup on the PS3 and run the display settings and tell it to auto-detect your display resolutions. This should allow it to find the Tv's supported display resolutions. I am not at home so I can't tell you exactly where the setting is.

Most games are rendered natively at 1280x720p, some render at a lower res but they must at least be upscaled to 720p.

Some HDTV's only support 480i and 1080i input, not 720p so if the game supports upscaling the native res is upscaled by the PS3 to 1080i so those tv owners can still play in high def. If you have 720p and 1080i/1080p selected as supported resolutions in the XMB, the PS3 defaults to outputting 720p as the upscaling probably makes little or no improvement to image quality compared to what your tv is capable of, possibly even the opposite. Resources for upscaling are more limited than during less taxing DVD or Blu-ray video playback.

COD4 does have 1080p, but it autimatically goes to 720p. Go to your display settings in your PS3 menu. I'm already sure you are using HDMI. Go to customize and uncheck 720p. I did this and when I started COD4 again, it was in 1080p. I am sure this will also fix the resolution for Assasins Creed.

It is said that for fast action games, 720p is better than 1080i, of course if your tv support 1080p it would be better than 720p.
At the same time it is a question of choice and some may prefer a higher resolution at 1080i because it's looks better for them.
With the PS3 if your tv is 720p and 1080i most games will output res at 720p,if you want 1080i everytime you have to go in the display setting of the ps3 and manually set your video output.
Make sure you uncheck the 720p box and leave the 1080i on.

Yes, i understand that for fast motion video, progressive is better, but if anything the arguement for 1080i would be that it = 540. I believe that is what is talked about due to the refreshing of the lines...

CoD4 on consoles is rendered internally at 600p, so regardless of what resolution you're getting from the PS3, you're not going to get a better image than that whether you let the PS3 upscale it or your TV.

Same for Ninja Gaiden Sigma at 720p.

Pretty much. 1080p was only added for those who don't support 720p, so that they wouldn't fall back on 480i. The game is going to look the same if your TV is set to 720p or 1080p.

I didn't know Ninja Gaiden Sigma wasn't 1080p though? It looks like it is.

When are they going to make some games truly rendered at 1080p? That will blow the lid off of the 360's 9GB disc capacity.

I have a couple that claim 1080p on the box but I think they just output at that rezz... the games were not rendered at that rezz. Ninja Gaiden is maybe the smoothest looking game I've seen though... I just thought the poor camera controls were distracting.
