Default Medieval (Czech Historical Epic starring Michael Caine and Ben Foster)

Didn't see a thread for this one, but saw a trailer for this one with my screening today, and it looks interesting. It releases in the US on September 9th:

Quote:
Synopsis: Inspired by the true story of Jan Žižka, one of greatest warriors in history. After the death of its reigning emperor, the Holy Roman Empire is plummeting into chaos while feuding brothers King Wenceslas of Czech and King Sigismund of Hungary battle for control of the empty throne. Daring and righteous mercenary leader Jan Žižka (Ben Foster) is hired by Lord Boresh (Michael Caine) to kidnap the powerful Lord Rosenberg's (Til Schweiger) fiancée, Lady Katherine (Sophie Lowe), to prevent Rosenberg's rise to power alongside the corrupt King Sigismund. Jan believes that Kings are the right hand of God and should be respected and obeyed, no matter what. As Katherine becomes caught in a dangerous political game between the monarchs, Jan falls in love with her strong spirit and dedication to saving the people. In a brave attempt to liberate her, he fights back with a rebel army to battle the corruption, greed and betrayal rampant amongst those clawing for power.

Anyone planning on seeing this? Surprised that there's no discussion. Then again I don't think I've seen any trailers for this.

Is this from a new no-name distributor or something?

The premise and everything is awesome. The trailer doesn't really pop though.

It doesn't look bad, it just doesn't look great.

I will watch it though. Ben Foster should have a Best Actor Oscar in 3-5 years. The guy is an amazing actor.

The name and imagery look interesting, and I'd love to see a medieval film as it has been too long since we last had one.

However, that synopsis reads like the back cover of a romance novel. Just what kind of film is this, who is the target audience?

I like Ben Foster's work but reviews are sparse, one day before opening. That is usually not a good sign; that maybe they are not showing the film to critics before opening as they aren't confidant enough that the film will garner decent reviews. This may be a film to stream at a later date rather than.

I think it's because the film's distributor The Avenue is a very small studio and can't afford to send review screeners

Guess I'm the first poster to see this. It's a well made film with some engaging battle/fight scenes. At 2 hours and 6 minutes it does slow down at times. Ben Foster does a good job as the lead. I did enjoy the film and I'm glad to have seen it theatrically. With that said, I don't imagine watching it again.

I don't want to judge a movie by its title but "Midieval" sounds so... generic. Couldn't they have strived for something more imaginative, take "Me and Earl and The Dying Girl" or "Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar" for example

Thanks for the summary. I like the medieval genre of films and the trailer looks interesting, though not enough of this trailer is luring me to see it in the theaters with other films competing with it on the same release weekend.

This is a widescreen film so seeing it in the theater is really the way to go. Barbarian is the only other film that opened at my local theater and Medieval is much better.

This has the most random cast in it. It looks like it'll be entertaining though.

According to Box Office. This should make a million dollars or so this weekend.

$1 million, that is not much, but not sure what the budget was.
That's still better than Delgo, which had a Budget of over $40 million, with a
Box office of about $694,782 – $915,840 or so. Okay, so maybe it beat Delgo for lowest opening in theaters for a wide release in the US.

Medieval: As of September 11, 2022 Budget 20.3 million+
All Releases
Domestic (100%)
$810,000
International (–)

Worldwide
$810,000

Not sure how many theaters that accounts for.

Thanks. My theater released a 3D supernatural action film that I wanted to see, which I ended up getting for free anyway with a free pass for a new movie next time, since my theater goofed up with the presentation of the film.

But yeah, I heard Barbarian is hit/miss depending on what one is looking for as far as horror expectations.

Glad I watched this in theaters. I enjoyed it a lot. Some nice battle scenes (especially the opening one) and Ben Foster was great. The political aspect was intriguing as well. I had never heard of the main character before but what he did was impressive. There were some brutal scenes. I wasn't sure what Michael Caine's character was supposed to be, though. He looked like a priest but also had a bit of wealth. I wished the relationship between his and Ben Foster's character had been fleshed out more. 4/5
