Default Watched a must see film: The Pianist

I rented this on HD DVD from Blockbuster. For those of you with an HD player -- get it. If you don't -- grab it when it comes out on BR (at least rent it). It is such an awesome and powerful film. The presentation in hi-def is fanatastic and the sound track (TrueHD) is amazing. I sure hope Universal releases this on BR so everyone can see it in Hi-Def.

Amazing story of horrors that mankind can endure but also a story of hope and survival. I was truly moved -- amazing film and story.

Don't miss it!

My wife has been trying to get me to watch this. I've been interested in watching it, but I know I'll be depressed afterwards!

Chick flick? Hardly -- it is an accurate portrayal of the brutality of Nazi Germany in Poland, the ghettoizing of over 500k Jews, and horrors of the holocaust, told from one man's perspective (it was based on the autobiography of Polish-Jewish Pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman.

It realistically depicts brutal death and war scenes. Although it is an Oscar film -- it is certainly not a chick flick (anymore than Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan are chick flicks).

Yeah -- this is not a feel good movie. But one that I believe should be watched by every high school history class in America.

Funny -- I tried to get my gf to watch it with me, but she thinks it will be too violent (which it is) and depressing. She watched the Bachelor and Dancing with the Stars upstairs while I watched this.

Yes, I believe this is better than Schindler's List in telling a story from the Holocaust. Polasnki's direction is remarkable and Adrien Brody won best actor for his performance. It is a very important film.

You're talking about renting HD DVDs here? Jk. I tried watching it before and was bored. That's alright. As long as you like it.

I got the DVD as a gift a few years ago. It's an extremely powerful movie and one I would gladly buy on Blu-ray.

Definitely a powerful movie that had similar but different effect than Schindlers List. Thanks for mentioning it!

I love movies and have always been one to appreciate great films but the pianist is not one of those. The movie just shows the transition of a piano player under nazi germany control. He goes from being somewhat famous to a poor refugee jew. The main thing about this movie that i did not like was the main character, he never did anything to try and save himself. I felt that throughout the entire movie he just walked around feeling bad about himself. There wasn't any real engaging storyline in my opinion.

I disagree ... he was surviving. And he later bore witness to things that no else could speak about ... because very few others survived (i.e., the Jewish uprising in the Warsaw ghetto).

I think his story of survival is very compelling.

I feel that all he did is just that, survive. He didn't learn anything or come to some great realization, he just survived. Which now i remember, he survived only because of others peoples misfortune or his own stupidity, there were very few moments where he survived from result of his intelligence or great abilities.

The Pianist is one of the best films I have watched. Very powerful and yet not dragging.

The music scores are very well done as well.

This one is probably one of few ones that I'd pre-order regardless of reviews. I love it.

Perhaps it would have been a better movie in your mind if the main character was played by Steven Segal or Van Damme -- and he walked around and kicked ass and shot Germans. But that would not have been accurate -- or nearly as compelling.

When faced with the situation -- he did what he had to do. He didn't just survive, he endured. And what he endured was astonishing. It's easy to pass judgment when you own an HDTV, Blu Ray player, car, and other worldly possessions. But I respect him in the utmost -- he truly knows what it is the live in constant fear, to starve, to struggle, to lose everything, to lose his dignity, to thirst, to lose his family, to endure. And later told his story for all the world to hear. And he told his story so that others never have to endure what he did. He was an eye witness historian -- his contribution to our collective historical consciousness is invaluable.

I like how everyone on this site who doesnt like a movie that is thought to be great is instantly coined as being one of those action hero movies goers. Especially when i clearly stated before that I love movies and have always been one to appreciate great films but the pianist is not one of those. Im sure im not the only one who didnt like this movie.

When he was faced with a situation he didnt do what he had to, most of the time he did nothing, only to make out in the end by some amazing misfortune of someone else or his own luck. This movie is based off fact, not 100%, it is an adapted screenplay directed by a child molester. When he did have any type of situation where he could do anything, all he could do was play the piano, and that saved him.

Im not passing judgement on the person, im passing judgement on the movie. I dont think it is an amazing movie, thats all, i dont hate jews and im not denying the holocaust. For christ sakes when you make a thread about a movie you say you like, your likely to get someone who disagrees.

I also think this is a great film. I liked it better than Schindler's List, but Schindler's List is also a great film. Really good acting in both. Steven Spielberg borrowed a lot from the 1978 TV movie Holocaust, another great film.

IMO The Pianist is really more about Captain Wilm Hosenfeld than about the musician Wladyslaw Szpilman.

what's insulting is the fact that he posted a stupid comment like that on a thread about a movie like this one. I wouldn't have cared if it was on some Transformers thread or whatever. If you read some of my other posts you'll realize that i am rarely insulting. Only to certain posters.
