Out of the films which I've watched the most noticeable grain was 'Alien vs Predator'--some scenes, that is. 'Sleepy Hollow' is also on my list.
So what films have you watched which had the most noticeable grain on Blu-ray? |

In my opinion "Goodfellas" was a crime against High Definition as a whole.

Film grain is not always (or some would argue, usually) a defect.
Both 300 and Miami Vice are supposed to be grainy. In fact, Miami Vice was shot entirely digitally (so there wouldn't have been any of the film grain associated with shooting on celluloid) and grain was added digitally later. See http://www.filmmakermagazine.com/blo...over-miami.php. With regard to 300, which was shot on film, director Zach Snyder had this to say about the film's grain: “I’ve been shooting film for years, and I haven’t switched over to the digital world yet. I feel like there is something still in film that’s organic. We even added more grain to the film because we didn’t want the movie to look like it had just got spit out of a computer. It had a little bit of an organic quality to it, so it didn’t feel so completely perfect. I wanted it to be a little rough around the edges." (You can read the full nterview here) |

Grain is inescapable in the foreseeable future. The lower the iso (light sensitivity) of film or digital imaging chip, the less grain will show up. That's why movies use bright lights for filming, using film that has a low iso so the images appear less grainy. The effort right now in digital cinema is to create cameras that can shoot in low light and maintain low iso. For instance, Cloverfield was shot using an F23 ($180,000 msrp, ouch) that was capable of some decent quality in low light.
Lets also call out the fact that when you don't see any grain in some movies, that means the studio producing it actually used noise reduction filters when processing the video. HDDVD for example, probably can't afford to waste its limited bitrate on grain while it is trying to encode the HD content. BD developers say screw it and let the encoder do what it wants to, resulting in higher bitrates, which means a more true to life image. In the end, the untouched transfer is more of an exact copy than the processed one. I believe grain like that which you find in 300 is supposed to make you subconsciously feel like you are watching something with some age to it. Or like in Man on Fire, where the some of the noisy images are supposed to make you feel the gritty nature of the action. |

For me it's a toss up between '300' and the 'Mission Impossible' Trilogy.
'300' was meant to look like that. So, I forgive it. 'Mission Impossible' was Paramount being way too cheap to invest in making sure that the quality was there. The MPEG-2 DVD transfer on a new format does not justify the price of the new format!!! |

Some of you treat 300's grain as a defect although that is how it was shot. The post, imo, is to list some of the BR with transfers no better than an upscaled standard DVD.
I've seen very few BR films yet as I am still relatively new to Blu so I didn't detect any grain on the few movies I have watched up to now. Very, very happy with the quality of these discs. |
