Default Speaker occasional 'pop' after receiver relocation. Advice on causes?

I need some help with this. I moved my receiver yesterday from the right side of my entertainment center to the left in order for all of the connectors to reach the back of the receiver and cleaned up in the process. Now I am getting an eventual 'pop' from my speakers. I think it may just be the center speaker, but I am not sure.

I wasn't the one who originally set it up; that was done by my brother, so I don't have much experience with hooking up speakers.

I was wondering if this problem could be from the wiring, connection, the speaker itself, or the receiver. It has been stationary for years so there was dust behind the receiver. Could dust at the end of the connections cause this to happen? Or did I just not connect the wires from the speakers to the receiver properly?

I checked the connections from the speakers to the receiver, and they are snugly in place.

I also vacuumed all around to clean up the dust that has been sitting around, if that may be a possible factor for the popping.
I didn't have any movies playing when the popping happened, so I know it is not any kind of player or disc problem, but it does still happen during movies.

Any advice on what to do to correct this?

If you have spade plugs on either end of the speaker cables...make sure the two spades plugs are not touching each other where connected at either the speaker end or receiver end. I have had this happen and it does lead to 'pops' and also the auto-shutdown of my receiver to save itself from a shorted overload.

I have had the receiver shut down before a long time ago because of that.

I'm not sure what spade plugs are. The plugs that are on my speakers are like loose copper wires on one end that hook up to the receiver, and the ones that go to my front speakers have a thin long metal piece that the speakers bite onto. The connector that goes to my center speaker has some twisty knobs that the wires are under...I am horrible at describing this to you. Haha! Sorry.

I will try to reconnect them and make sure that none are touching.

these are spade plugs.

1. is it for BOTH speakers? which ones? once you find out and isolate the culprit...
2. check your connections (yes, again please), and see if any of the bare wires might be brushing up on either of em.
3. dont play any music/material for now, but crank ur amp a little bit up. see if any popping occurs during so. if none occurs....
4. try playing music now, see how it goes.
5. describe the pop, and where its coming from. maybe from your speaker, heck maybe from the amp for some reason.
6. see if your reciever shuts down (i hope not)...

let us know.

I reconnected all of the wires and checked the back of the center speaker too. So far I haven't heard any more popping and I have had it on for quite a few minutes without any sounds going. Cranked it up and heard nothing. All seems good right now!

There are no spade connectors on my setup. Hmm...it must be older than I thought. Haha!

If no problems arise, then thank you both for your advice. I was just worried when it started that something might have been seriously wrong with it. *Shrug*

Okay, I seem to still be having this problem. I thought it went away but it is just rare in between clicks and pops. (I was also in out of state for two weeks unable to test it more thoroughly.)

I double checked the connections in the rear of the center speaker but that didn't make any difference.
The sound is sometimes a subtle click that can barely be heard over a movie soundtrack, but other times it is a more noticeable pop.

I am lost as to why this is happening. Any more help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

youve double checked to make sure youve got red hooked to red and black to black, right? you could just have something crossed. or...check your speaker wire to see if it is frayed somewhere and grounding out. crank some music up on one speaker at a time to see if you hear the popping from just one speaker or on just one channel. take the time to do some more troubleshooting.

Maybe you need to clean the reciever. Crack it and blow it out.

T-Town Oil-

I am fairly certain that the positive and negative connections are correct, but I will re-check them.
Are you saying that it is possible that there may be fraying anywhere in the wire, not just the ends? I will run through all of the wires for this too.
I know I heard the click during listening between two different input modes from the receiver; both analog and optical, but I'm not sure if this gives anyone more information about the problem.
I am unsure how to only play sound from one speaker to try and isolate the problem. I will look into it but if someone has a suggestion as to the best, easiest (maybe), or most practical way of doing this then please inform me.

fupduk2-

Literally open the receiver and blow out the dust? I will need to make a purchase of compressed air before I can do this. Will look into it.

Slicker1-

I'm not exactly sure how old all of the speakers are. The front may be around ten years, center maybe six, and surround possibly six or less.
Makers are in my signature.

Front Loudspeaker - Sharp CP-7700, x2
Center Loudspeaker - Optimus Pro-CS511
Surround/Rear Loudspeaker - KLH AV1001B, x2

I will update this thread after more testing and if any new information is found.
