I have an OLED55C8PUA and I want to find out is it possible to force HDR on a SDR blu-ray.

I tried that with my OPPO 203 by forcing it to convert everything to HDR. Needless to say, SDR forced into HDR does not look good. The color is off, and bright scenes are overblown and clipped. Of course if you prefer the tv to do it instead, go into the Service Menu and change HDR_Module from Normal to ON in your LG TV. That way, all SDR material will be HDR whether from your cable box, BD player, streamer, etc.

I'd stay clear of LG's service menus, unless you know what you're doing or don't mind the chance of bricking your TV.
If you're after a bit more pop use the HDR Effect or Vivid mode. The BDs are mastered to display at a set luminance, so boosting the brightness and contrast will look like crap, plus you'll lose out on a few picture controls that help the picture look more accurate (if you force HDR). The C8's OLED Light setting is about 21 for a dark room, ramping it up to 100 should be bright enough, it almost four times the value! |

The data on a UHD disc in regards to HDR does not exist on a standard Blu-ray Disc. What you are trying to achieve simply won’t work. The Blu-ray Discs just don’t have the HDR data on them. Some people get confused as you have what’s known as HDR to SDR conversion. That is specifically for UHD HDR being converted to SDR for purposes of still having a good 4K picture on non HDR TVs or people who prefer to not have the HDR on their TVs as they simply don’t like its effect on PQ.

Yes, of course, you are right. To the results of pushing an HDR type of processing to a format that has no included data to support it, it would just be like turning on “dynamic” mode on many TVs. I can’t see it as anything but detrimental to the picture quality.
