Default Pinocchio Aspect Ratio

On the Sleeping Beauty Blu-ray, there is a trailer for Pinocchio, which we heard was just announced with details on the release for March.
However, the trailer is in a 4:3 ratio, aka 1.33. I thought this was just a trailer they threw on from the DVD, but then I start to think...
Wide screen movies were made to compete against television. To get a better experience in the theater, and hence worth spending the money to see a movie out, the screens and movies were made in a wider aspect ratio. Eventually they got a little crazy with cinema-scope, and some other wider formats, but usually modern films are made at 2.39:1 or 1.85:1. I realized that Pinocchio was released in 1940, making it almost 70 years old, and that is old enough for the OAR to NOT be wide screen.
I did a little sleuthing and found that Pinocchio was originally released in 1.37:1 aspect ratio, just slightly wider than the standard 4:3 TV.
So now I think the trailer WAS in HD... since it was very high quality despite the aspect ratio.
I guess what I am asking is, is this really going to be a 1.37:1, non-wide screen release? Or is it possible I am mistaken or something?

I will still get this, but I can see the complaining starting already. "Why isn't this HD? What happened to the wide screen? What's with the black boxes? Is my TV broken?" etc.etc.etc...

Pinocchio Blu-ray will also feature DisneyView, which takes up the whole screen via frames replacing the black bars.

Yep. Pinocchio is not widescreen and Disney thankfully was convinced many years ago that collectors want films in their OARs

I am glad they are not going to morph it then to make it wide screen.
I just fear the complaints and confusion that will arise.
As for the Disney View, that is a great idea. I hope you can customize it, or at least chose from different panels to use. I like the idea of having something there to show people it is suppose to be in this aspect. Plus having something like the wood carving filigree used in the film would be nice.

No matter what, you're going to see the film exactly as it was intended, in the Original Aspect Ratio. Like many other films that are not 1:85:1, there will be bars (more specifically, pillars) to fill in the missing screen area, just in this case they will be vertical instead of horizontal. You won't be missing anything, nor will you be experiencing the film in any way other than it was intended. In the end, that should be what we all aim for: a true theater experience at home. I for one can deal with the pillar issue...

Thank god it's being released at 1.37. The fight for films to be brought on DVD in their widescreen forms would've been a waste if film companies started releasing fullscreen films like Pinocchio in a fake widescreen. I'm glad Disney is making the right choice.

Can't imagine it will be less distracting than black bars, haha.

don't forget the original reason for widescreen t.v.'s was so we could watch
movies the WAY they were made.....But not ALL movies were made that way..

Hey, I'm not complaining! Just making sure it was really an HD preview (since it looks like it but was not widescreen).
I am ALWAYS for OAR, I have been since widescreen DVDs started coming out!
Losing image, be it horizontally or vertically, is always a bad thing.
I just suspect people will still complain, but I hope not.
Pinocchio is one of my favorite films, and I am thrilled, again, that Disney is doing it right.
Sleeping Beauty is AMAZING! The quality in the sound is astounding! I have already seen it twice and want to show it to everyone! One of my close friends watched it with us last time, and she was almost in tears over how amazing it was. She is so use to the low quality sound pan and scan DVD. The one with the loud high pitched hiss. When she saw and heard it like this, she was just flabbergasted.

GO DISNEY!

Thank goodness for film critics, film historians, and animation fans raising holy hell in 1987 when the Disney company -- for the 50th anniversary of Snow White -- released Snow White to theaters in 1.85:1, with the top and bottom of the 1.37:1 frame chopped off.

Starting with the re-release of Fantasia in 1990, Disney has respected the original intent of their artists for theatrical re-releases of classic titles. It should be noted that it has been touch and go with them for myriad titles on home video ever since. Scores of 80's and 90's live action titles have come to video in MAR, and some of these are heartbreaking. The Journey of Natty Gann - one of the finest live-action Disney films of the 80's, was shot in scope to befit the depression-era adventure of a broke teenage girl trying to make across the country to reunite with her father. It is only available on home video in 1.33:1. The list goes on and on.

So yes, the modern Disney company gives respect to their high-profile titles, its how they treat their below-the-radar titles that still ruffles some feathers.

do we have any shots of these "DisneyView" bars? I wonder if they are going to put red curtains on the side to make it look like a theater...
