I credit The Lord of the Rings movies, particularly the first one, which was released in late 2001, with playing an instrumental role in the healing of America’s collective psyche after the 9/11 attacks. The Fellowship of the Ring was a huge blockbuster, and it gave us something else to think about besides the horrific terrorist attacks. I remember that, all of a sudden, people everywhere were talking about that first entry in the Trilogy instead of talking constantly about 9/11. The movie did not make the tragic reality of the real-life attacks go away, but it did provide some considerable mental distraction solace.
I wonder which upcoming movie is going to be the “healer”, so to speak, when the COVID-19 situation hopefully stabilizes. |
