Sony Pictures Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)

Resident Evil : Apocalypse Blu-ray

Resident Evil : Apocalypse Blu-ray Review

Why should this be the only Resident Evil BD not to have its own thread? Strangely, despite having the lowest AQ/PQ ratings in the series, it remains fairly expensive - probably why it's the only one I don't own yet. Do other Resident Evil fans agree that the US BD is the nadir, BD tech-wise, of the series? According to HD's List of International BDs with Better PQ, AQ, and/or More Extras thread - Japan, Brazil, Russia, the Czech Republic and Poland all have superior editions of this film on BD - and, currently, this is the only Resident Evil BD on that list. WTF?

The Japanese disc is the one to get, but it's expensive. I think it actually may be OOP at this point.

It's under $12 on Amazon and can be had for even less through a third party. Not really that expensive.

Wait a second though. Are you referring to the theatrical cut disc or the extended cut disc?

I was referring to the US theatrical cut. Is there an extended US cut?

There is. That's the one from Japan that's OOP.

The Japanese disc is only available in the Biohazard Pentalogy from what I understand. I own it and the transfer is excellent and I prefer the extended cut as well. If you want to a cheaper route, the German disc is excellent as well, but not lossless - only DTS-HD High-Res audio and the in-movie titles and descriptions for locations and such are in German.

I own the quadrilogy (shame on no eng lossless audio for Afterlife!) and it's the extended there also but I'm pretty sure it's/was available in the earlier Trilogy set also if it can still be found.

How is the Japanese disc of Retribution, same as US?

I own the Steelbook, and from the looks of it, the picture quality is good. I have no problems or complaints on it...haven't seen it in a while, so I may check it out again...the Steelbook is the theatrical release, so I have no clue how the extended version looks like or what's added to it...

So the Japanese Pentalogy set looks to be about $89 (although the Google translation of the page seems to say only $59.99) + shipping (which is big from Japan, right?):

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Bioha...Blu-ray/59159/

http://www.amazon.co.jp/Biohazard-Pe...=AN1VRQENFRJN5

It looks gorgeous (the pix feature images from Retribution), but with Resident Evil 6 coming out next year ... not sure if there's any point since they'll have a complete (? ) set coming out.

HD : "Report" link is not working, even extracted address wouldn't work.

leem6453 : Yeah, marketplace has/had it for $7.43 and it was $6 once, but the US version …

The Japanese disc in the Pentalogy is the same as the 3D U.S. disc, complete with bonus disc, though the menus are in Japanese.

Yeah, it would be the perfect set were it not for the lack of lossless English audio on Afterlife.

The German disc looks far from excellent, these days. I sold it and bought the French release, which does look excellent, (although the theatrical cut). VC-1 encoded, BD50 and none of the raised black levels, that the Sony disc has. English DTS-HD-MA 5.1 audio. Region locked, for you region locked tramps out there.

The MPEG-2 on the DE disc is a deal breaker for me. If it was VC-1 or AVC I probably would have gone that cheaper route.

I really hope I have this wrong : but if you can't play region B discs or 3D, then you're SOL except for the US disc? Except that the German disc is extended & region A, but it's MPEG2 & no better than the US disc PQ wise for $18+shipping? So one should just wait for the eventual remaster?

The German disc looks fine to me and it's the extended cut. The black levels are better than either the Japanese or U.S. disc. It's likely the same transfer as the French release, just with a VC-1 encode which really makes little difference unless you sit three inches from the screen and scrutinize the transfer. I also doubt there's much difference between the DTS-HD HR audio and DTS-HD MA because I couldn't tell any difference between the U.S. PCM, Japanese TrueHD, and German DTS-HD HR.

I just might get the DE disc then if it ever drops to around $10 or so.

If this thread had appeared a few months ago, you could have had a copy for the cost of shipping. I think I just threw it away.

Well, at Amazon.de, the extended cut would be $23.24 as best as I can tell without ordering it. At Amazon.fr, the extended cut would be $27.02, as figured by them ($26.11 according to Google). Both seem somewhat outrageous as I don't remember the second film in the series or how good it was (I never owned it unless, perhaps, VHS?).
So, HD, unless you know of a better place to price these things (Schindler's, er, sorry, your list only shows Amazon), $10 is a long ways off.

P.S. Threw it away!?! ...
