Default The Shining 4K Picture Issues

Has anyone else experienced issues with the Shining in 4K? I recently upgraded my equipment, so this is the first time viewing the picture in 4K, but during the scene where Jack goes to the gold ballroom for the second, I begin getting static lines dancing across my screen. I know it is not the equipment, I also tried a different HDMI cable (going from a 4K rated cable to an 8K rated to ensure it was properly handling the traffic.) I tested out the movie in 4K on Vudu and did not experience the issue. Of course, I contacted support and they refused to do anything to help me. I have not experienced this issue with any other 4K movie purchased from iTunes, and was wondering if anyone else had a similar issue.

Unfortunately no, I had zero issues with The Shining 4K on iTunes. That does look like an equipment issue though?

I had the exact same thing too, in the same scene. I figured it must be an issue with the Dolby Vision file of the film played on the Apple TV, as it had the same glitch in the same scene when I tested it on my iPad Pro, but the scene played fine on my iPhone 7 which does not play any sort of HDR (the iPad Pro plays in Dolby vision if available, I’m sure)

I contacted Apple support over this, and first they said it was a problem with the download, and to delete the file and redownload it (the tech support guys didn’t seem to know that Apple TV’s stream the files, and there’s no downloading or deleting files involved) but after a bit of persuading, they refunded me and said they’d contact the studio for a fix. I guess they haven’t, and this was on December 1st last year

Is your tv playing it in Dolby Vision or normal HDR? It might not be much help, but maybe force your box to play it in HDR rather than Dolby Vision if you can, to see if we can figure out wether the problem is just the Dolby Vision grading of the film, or both forms of HDR

I just wanted to say I just checked it on my end and get no such issue. Everything looks fine.

Kind of strange that it happened in the same scene (almost) as your avatar.

Do you know how to force it to play in HDR as opposed to Dolby Atmos?

It has to be an issue with the file in iTunes, since I watch it on Vudu in 4K with no issues.

Glad to know I’m not the only one! Hopefully it gets fixed. I’ll have to try and contact iTunes support again and hopefully they fix the file on their end.

To force a film to play in a certain format, go into the Apple TV Settings, and under ‘Video and Audio’, there should be a section called ’Format’. Click into this, then choose the output that says ’4K HDR’. Then go back and click ’Match Content’, and switch ’Match Dynamic Range’ to OFF, for the purpose of this test. (Make sure you put your settings back to whatever they were before, once you’ve tested the film out)

This will then force it to play The Shining in 4K HDR rather than 4K Dolby Vision. If you have the same interference on the scene, we know this problem affects both the 4K Dolby Vision and the 4K HDR iTunes files for this film. It might even be worth testing it out in the 1080p format, to see if this problem affects the standard HD file as well as the 4K versions

I’ve attached a picture of what Apple said to me after I reported this, including them saying they’ve let the content provider know about this problem, and them refunding me. I’m from the UK and this was all done through the UK store. I’m guessing this could be a worldwide problem though

Did you contact support by phone or live chat?

I contacted Apple through their support app on my iPhone. Under the Get Support section I selected ‘iTunes Store’, then ‘Other iTunes Store Topics’, then ‘Item Plays, But Looks or Sounds Bad’. I corresponded through email, but I understand you can do a live chat or schedule a call too

I've just tested that particular scene with my Apple TV and my 65" LG OLED and no problems here at my end in the UK.

That interference looks like A possible HDMI fault. Try it in a different port.

Same issue changing it to both other formats. Strangely enough, no issue playing it in 1080p through my iPhone.

My AppleTV did exactly this. I checked it on my iPhone11 and it was the same.

No issues here so don’t think it’s the transfer.

If it’s not the transfer and not my TV or HDMI port of HDMI cable, I’m not sure what else it could be.

You never mentioned what happened with your Dolby Vision off experiment.
I'd bet the scene will look fine in HDR10.
