Default PC World: Hello Blu-ray... adios, HD DVD

And yet another (and more) piling on, this one from PC World via Yahoo News.

More great news. Just keep it coming, as the preassure on Paramount and Universal to release in blu-ray magnifies

It's sad, really, seeing Toshiba's response to all this. As though they're living in a different reality. I guess they're doing it to prolong the war long enough to create some kind of bargaining chip, but really they're just becoming more and more pathetic and irrelevant.

And Paraversal has to be right around the corner (that corner being within the next quarter or so).

Reading comments on various articles, I keep seeing people saying Blu doesn't upconvert DVDs, am I wrong, but don't BD players also play DVDs? This one has one in it too.

Yeah, BD players are backward compatible to DVD and work as an upscaler.

People are idiots. I hear all the time that HD DVD will win because the players can play DVDs and Blu-Ray players can't. Those same idiots don't own HDM players yet, and they'll get the picture by the time Blu-ray wins.

waitwaitwaitwaitwait. wait just a minute here.

The second sentence of the article is as follows:

"There was no doubt in my mind when I heard that Universal studios lined up with Warner Bros in its support for Blu-ray."

What in the world am I missing here? Universal's neutral? How in tarnation could I miss an announcement like that?

Read the line after, he says he knows Uni hasn't changed yet.

Yeah, I don't know why he'd throw in that line about Universal, when he knows it's not true ... yet.

Maybe he has it on a good source that it is indeed true with only the announcement scheduling to be determined. In that way he may personally be convinced as he states.

No, he says "Hold off on your calls and letters. I know--Universal is still supporting HD DVD too; see "Universal Denies Reports That It's Leaving HD DVD.""

That suggests neutral support, not HD (or BD) exclusive support.

It seems that, given the link in that sentence, his assumption of support is premised on that go-nowhere Variety article from a couple weeks back. Oh well.

This report is awful! It is disorganized, confusing, and incorrect!
He assumes that since a rumor from 2 weeks ago said Universal was releasing Blu that it was true. This HAS NOT happened yet.
Further more, WTF is with this page? It adds "Digg this" and that here and there and makes no sense, and then comments in the middle of it?
What 3rd grader put this together?

The article may suck, but the sentiment is good. And the more normal people ('cause we ain't normal) see these articles the better. Many won't do research, they'll happen across an article somewhere and take it as gospel.

As anecdote (or antidote as my friend says), my mom's in the market for an HDTV so at Sunday family dinner I made a blanket statement: Whoever takes her, if she wants a high-def DVD player make sure it's blu-ray.

Well, my nephew says: Really? Someone at work told me HD DVD was still viable.

And that's all the info many people will get. They happen across an article or hear from somebody (or somebody's friend) about this stuff and assume it's true. So the more they see about blu-ray, the bettererer.
