Default PSN Download Speeds Being Restricted (EU and the US)

Yippee, I should be able to play Final Fantasy VII Remake by the time Part 2 comes out. Ok, maybe a bit much, but this could be a real issue if it's being restricted by any meaningful amount than what it already is since they've been restricting it already for years. I'll have to test it with something over the weekend...

And Sony gives me more reasons not to by another PlayStation.

Thankfully, I downloaded all of my 190+ games before the throttling went into effect.

You do realize that this is not solely Sony doing this, right? Microsoft, Alphabet (YouTube), Netflix etc are all doing the same thing?

Not in the US. At least not yet. Unfortunately would expect it at some point, but anyways, my main concern is how long this will last and if Sony will just conveniently forget to ever switch it back or not at some point.

As I posted earlier, I plan on testing it and seeing if it's anything drastic to actually worry about.

I recently downloaded the new expansion for borderlands 3 and there was no slowness detected on my end. I downloaded just like it normally does. I wonder if some of the slow and is going to happen in more congested areas of the country?

I assume you're aware that this is in response to a global crisis and not an arbitrary decision just for giggles, right?

What does a virus have to do with Sony restricting download speeds? There’s no call for it.

Internet usage is at an all time high considering the amount of people staying at home right now. This was called for in Europe to maintain internet stability so Sony is being proactive for the US.

This is the USA not Europe. Just cause they are doing something doesn’t mean we need to follow.

This just seems worse to me because then people will be using less bandwidth but at the same time using bandwidth longer. During peak business hours drastically limit it and during the night leave it alone to encourage people to download overnight. Between this and Amazon it will also be counter-productive to staying at home if people go out hunting a physical copy. Especially with Final Fantasy VII which has a big size.

My internet feels restricted enough. 2-5 Mbps is insane. Quite a few times I am lucky to get anything at all.

I think you're missing the point, it will probably need to be done here as well. Sony is getting just getting ahead of it. Welcome to life for right now, sorry it's not accommodating.

Sounds like online play will not be affected. Only downloads...

This shouldn’t be life right now cause of a virus. Internet had nothing to do with what is going on and our citizens shouldn’t be letting our government turn into communists or dictators.

Not really. Even if you were planning on going mostly digital like I was before all of this (and probably still will), they still make the same great games they did before this announcement. While Sony does some questionable things at times, it still should always come back to the games, and that's never an issue with PlayStation. You don't have to love Sony.

And I kind of have managed to run a test so far. It gave me an error overnight and didn't download much, but from what I can tell, it would take me about 30 hours to download Final Fantasy VII Remake if I went the digital route I was planning. That doesn't seem too much longer than I sadly expected, so I guess this really isn't that big of a deal. Nothing drastic at the very least.

So here's the math because it's not about government. When the entire country is sitting at home and using the internet it creates more demand. A car can go full speed with 2 people but it's gonna have trouble if you put 53 people in the car. If they don't limit traffic and it crashes, you have nothing. And right now people are using the internet for work and business as well as pleasure. Again, this is life right now. If you had no internet for a week because they didn't do this, you'd view it differently.

I won’t be going digital next gen. Not going to when they are lowing speeds on purpose.

LMFAO your kidding me right? Do you have any idea how much bandwidth is being consumed on a daily basis right now globally. I'm actually quite shocked the internet itself hasn't crashed yet at the level 3, or one of the 8 main global hubs controlling the entire thing.

There is plenty of reason to restrict bandwidth, people dont need 4/8k VOD speeds right now and you certainly dont need to download at 5.8 mb/sec on torrents.

When you are in a global crisis the likes if which hasn't been seen since around 1913 you need to restrict so everyone has access.

Jesus the entitled, uninformed, and greedy are annoying as all hell.

This virus thing isn’t that bad as bad as everyone is making it out to be. The flu has killed more people then this virus. I’ve been running around doing my normal stuff besides going to the movies or out to eat since the started and been feeling great. Had a mild case of the flu one day and that’s it and been great ever sense. When I pay for something I expect to get it.
