Thumbs down Chicago Tribune Lists 100 Greatest Films Of All Time. We All Know What #1 Is...

http://www.chicagotribune.com/featur...togallery.html

I knew Citizen Kane was going to be number one before I even finished reading the god d**n article headline. Apparently cinema peaked in 1941.

Does Citizen Kane routinely get the number one spot simply by proxy? Or because your college film professor used it as the focal point of every f***ing lecture? Is it written in the 10 commandments? Is the name Orson Welles inscribed in the Dead Sea scrolls? Is the Illuminati using this movie to take over the world? Did America enter World War II because Adolph Hitler didn't like Citizen Kane? Is watching Citizen Kane the amount of times based on your year of birth AFTER the movie released to be a requirement in order to be a film critic? Did Nostradamus predict that Citizen Kane would be best movie of all time before film even existed? Did the Mayan Calendar stop in 2012 because they thought that was the year people would stop believing Citizen Kane was best movie of all time?

You'd think by how utterly overrated and overstated Citizen Kane is that it has the power to cure cancer and that Orson Welles was a f***ing modern day superhuman A.I. polymath that made Albert Einstein look like an amoeba.

But anyway, that list sucks. Hurt Locker being 26 spots above Apocalypse Now which is shamefully low at 95 to begin with? Ugh.

The list is aggregated:

Quote:
Stacker gathered data from Metacritic (as of March 16, 2021), where movies are scored based on their aggregate critical reception. Movies not yet released to the public were not included.
So it’s not really all that accurate or has an personal insight to it. It’s not really the “Chicago Tribune’s best of list”, it’s just a quick click bait job. I’d hardly get all that bent out of shape over it.

Citizen Kane always seems to take top spot so I guess there is a reason it always keeps on getting top spot.

Who cares what gets top spot anyway does it change what your favourite movie is? Most top 100 lists are subjective anyway. In less you are talking about athletes.

Taste is subjective. A lot of people like it. You make it almost sound like your life is ruined. It's no news that it is often high on top lists. But this list is aggregated from Metacritic, so it is just based on positive scores. It is what it is.

The Dark Knight is clearly the greatest movie ever made. Citizen Kane is too old and too long.

Op what should be number 1? Curious so we can all have a totally unreasonable meltdown about it like you did with this list.

The greatest film ever made is clearly Batman V Superman.

What the **** is the problem with Citizen Kane being #1? It's a completely legitimate assertion, even if one disagrees with it. It's one of the most analyzed movies ever, if not the most, so instead of throwing a ridiculous temper tantrum how about reading some of the stuff written about it and see the arguments in favor of the movie?

Or just not care, that's what I do. I've never thought it was an amazing film and I never will, that's just the way it is.

It’s not that Citizen Kane isn’t a great or influential movie, it’s that it smacks of a complete lack of imagination for it to still top these lists decades later. A large factor for that is that so many film students and budding critics are told it’s great and made to study it, therefore any kind of outside-the-box thinking that maybe it ain’t all it’s cracked up to be is considered sacrilegious. When Vertigo topped that last Sight & Sound poll I was thrilled, not because I like it better than Kane but simply because it was refreshing to see and felt like people put some thought into it.

While I was legitimately peeved at the number one spot, I did try my best to play it up for laughs in voicing my frustration lol.

Here's a few I'd put at Number 1 I guess;

- 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
- No Country for Old Men (2007)
- Sorcerer (1977)
- 28 Days Later (2002)
- The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966)

Lists like this are prevalent and have been around as long as I can remember. There is no point in looking at them, because opinions are all contradiction.
