Default The Crow (1994) will return to theaters for its 30th anniversary

Quote:
The modern-gothic original that entranced audiences and critics alike, The Crow tells the tale of a young musician brutally murdered alongside his beloved fiancée, only to be risen from the grave by a mysterious crow. Seeking revenge, he battles a criminal underground that must answer for its crimes. Adapted from the comic book saga of the same name, this action-packed thriller from director Alex Proyas (Dark City) features hypnotic style, dazzling visuals, and a soulful performance by the late Brandon Lee. Part of the "Scream Greats Series" presented by PARAMOUNT SCARES & FANGORIA. Bonus content with the feature: Legendary production designer Alex McDowell revisits the 1994 goth masterpiece taking us on a fascinating deep dive covering all facets of designing the film.

Got my ticket last week, and I'm eagerly looking forward to the screening. I've grown up with this movie for most of my life, but I've never seen it with an audience. So hopefully, that will be a new way to immerse myself in it. For me, THE CROW is right up there with other pictures that have shaped my identity, from BACK TO THE FUTURE and SUPERMAN as a kid, to THE LORD OF THE RINGS and THE MATRIX in my earlier adulthood.

Wow, I've never seen this movie either before and was going to rent it on iTunes, but now I'll wait for a theatrical release instead.

Too many people want to dismiss it as a stereotypical action film, or because they think its just like any other comic-based effort. But unlike other pictures in the overall genre, THE CROW was inspired by a real-life tragedy, and the source's material's author took eight long years to finish it because the process was so painful for him. His name is James O'Barr; you can find interviews and such with him on YouTube. He's married with a family now, but it took a very long time for him to find any kind of real peace in his life.

Me either. Just never got around to it. There is a 4K release too so if I see it at a theater and like it, I can snag the 4K. Cool.

I just got back from my local screening. The picture and sound quality were amazing, which made me think the remaster supervised by original DP Dariusz Wolski was used for both this exhibition and the 4K disc. My only disappointment about the screening itself, was that there weren't actually many people in attendance. The auditorium probably sat around 100 to 150 people, but I counted maybe 20, myself included. Also, Cinemark's website seemed to suggest that the movie's production designer Alex McDowell would be addressing the audience at some point, but all we got was a very brief video clip beforehand. I still loved seeing the movie on the big screen, so in that regard it gets top marks. But I'll grant the experience as a whole a middle grade, say 5 out of 10.

If you haven't watched the episode of Cursed Films on The Crow, you should.

Super fascinating. Great interviews.

I don't know if I've seen that specific one, but I have watched other documentaries on the film, and there's plenty of detailed information. An author named Bridget Baiss crafted a very well-researched book as well, called The Crow: The Story Behind The Film. The original hardcover was first published in 2000, followed by a paperback edition in 2004. But next week, an updated and expanded version of the paperback will be released to celebrate the 30th anniversary...so I'll definitely be picking that up. Mrs. Baiss originally interviewed practically anyone who would speak with her the first time around, and with so much time having passed I'm sure the update will be fairly extensive. The first edition was 272 pages, and the original paperback was just a minor increase to 288. But the new version will have 360, which probably equals at least three new chapters of content. So as a longtime fan of this movie, I'm really looking forward to seeing what else she's learned about this incredible story over the years.

I was attempting to be respectful. The way I was raised, you addressed a woman as "Mrs." if you knew there was a great possibility she was married (and as it turns out she is, with a teen daughter as well). Simply using her first name was considered too casual by comparison, or even thoughtless.

Saw The Crow today with a decent size crowd. Several people applauded once the end credits started which is something that used to happen much more often.

I wish that happened with my screening. I saw it with a fairly good-sized crowd and it was just quiet at the end, which was awkward..

This was my first time seeing the film too. I thought it was really great, and ahead of its time in many ways. I loved the Crow character, which felt like some weird combination of The Joker, Batman, with a sprinkling of Jesus mixed in. Brandon Lee was perfect for the role. I also really loved Ernie Hudson and his character in this too.

My favorite part of Cursed Films is the input from Michael Berryman. But the whole thing is very thorough, if brief. Not all the episodes were home runs, but this one is a doozy. SO sad to lose such a crazy talented person. The Crow was meant to be his launching pad and it became his epitaph.

And I also watched it recently and enjoyed it. Some of the dialogue is classic.

[Show spoiler]Albrecht: Great. A guy shows up looking like a mime from Hell and you lose him right out in the open. Well, at least he didn't do that walking against the wind shit, I hate that.

Michael Berryman will always be known to me, as the gang leader choked to death by Koga Shuko in the ridiculously funny yet also briefly serious adaptation of the Double Dragon video game series. But I saw a Skull Cowboy scene he did for The Crow, right before Eric enters the church to save Sarah. It was obviously never finished, so the moment itself is pretty rough, but it gives you a general idea of what could've been.

When that line came up during my screening yesterday, people on both sides of me started laughing. It just goes to show that the movie still works, all these years later. When a story touches people across the generations, that's the definition of a masterpiece.

Saw this last night, and it was an absolute treat to see on the big screen. Even after all the times I have watched this movie over the years, the ending still manages to brings tears to my eyes. An absolute classic.

I've seen this movie countless times growing up. But yesterday was the first day I got to see it on the big screen..

Before the movie started. They played a little featurette about the production design of the movie. It lasted about 5 minutes.
