After weeks of talking with all of you new friends of mine!! I have decided to finally go for a ps3 and was all set today in BB to get the 40 as I had previously started the earlier thread of not finding any 80's in BB's. Well the guy at the register told me AFTER the video game guy said "dude, wait for the 80GB" I told him I dont use my ps2 games anymore and he said, just wait. I then strolled over to gamestop across the street and that guy also said the 40 sucks. YET, the ps3 playing on display was like an airplane and he said its not a real ps3. WTF. I'm so damn torn.

If you don't need PS2 compatibility, go for it. It will play PS3 games great, serve well as a media extender for your PC or mac if you want and makes for a great blu-ray player if you have it hooked up to an HDTV.
*Edit* As you can see from my sig, I have the discontinued 60GB model which is similar to the 80GB model. If you can afford to wait and save the extra cash, it might be worth waiting to buy an 80GB model is the missing features in the 40GB model are worth it for you. SACD playback - DSD decode to PCM over HDMI
2 more USB ports Flash memory readers 40 GB less disk You can upgrade or use an external HD later for more space. If you don't think you'll use the above buy the 40GB model. I have the 80GB, don't use the SACD because I have a MUCH better transport and processor, don't use the PS2 stuff, and don't use the flash readers cause I stream content. I think I'd even trade it to someone local for the 40GB. Edit: Do you live in Austin, TX? Last edited by CAB; 01-21-2008 at 12:24 AM. |

The only real downfall to the 40GB PS3 is that it only has 2 USB ports. And, in that case, if you want to play Rock Band, you will have to buy a USB extender unit to plug in all of the instruments at once for a whole band multiplayer experience.
Otherwise, it's pretty good since you can substitute the hard drive later on (the only other thing I would mention as a negative if it was a permanent spec). |

Yes currently the 40 GB can't play ps 1/2 but sony says perhaps in the future they will make an update so that you can but i doubt they will. Anyway the 80 GB can only play 70 % of ps2 games so you really dont need anything better then a 40 anyway man

I agree with "Blu-ray Fanatic" if they balk at selling you the 40, tell them "fine, if you don't want to sell me a 40, someone else will", and start to walk out of the store... I bet they stop you. These morons are the same stupid pieces of crap who up until 6 months ago were talking people into getting a 360. |

I have all the GTA's and I think tiger woods for my original ps2 and have not played them in over a year since I have a 360. So I figure I wont use the ps3 for ps2 games but then thought, well maybe i will someday so I dont have to sit in my bedroom? I dont know. The ONE thing that really is leaning me towards the 40 is the issue that most people say its a lot quieter than the 80. Whatever system that was running in gamestop was incredibly loud. Granted, it is in a glass display and dont see any air holes at all...in fact the glass was hot to the touch.
Is motorstorm worth the additional price tag? I played the demo in the sotre and it was fun, but dont see myself sitting there and playing it. The money is not the issue, I just dont want to regret getting the 40, that is all. |

When I got my 60 GB model, there was no way I was going to get the 20 GB model instead. I had a bad taste in my mouth from the 360's 20 GB HDD, and if I'm spending a lot of money on something I want it do have as much functionality as possible.

So should I just buy the 80GB from bestbuy.com? I have $150 gift cards from BB which is why I want to buy it there. I read a guy over at avsforum state he works at Bestbuy and he was informed by a sony rep that there will be a new 120GB SKU and the current 80GB will be/are phasing out and te 40 will no longer have spidey or anything else included. Obviously, there is no proof to it, but its out there

Yeah but you can at least upgrade the HD in a PS3 with a any Standard Sata Notebook Drive. But i do agree with you, but its not liek the 20 was around for long anyways.

And the 80GB PS3 plays 85% of PS3 games. This constantly increases with each update. So it may be more than 85% currently. |
