I've had a Toshiba HD-DVD player for almost a year and recently added a Sony BDP-S300. My first three Blu-ray buys were "Terminator 2," "Tears of the Sun" and "3:10 to Yuma." Th first looked super — as good as any of the HD-DVDs I've seen. "Tears" looked good mainly when viewing the Hawaii locales. Much of the transfer looked dark and not really any clearer than an upconverted SD DVD.

It's "3:10" that has me worried. After a very long upload (a number of bars marching by for maybe a minute) it sat still until I pushed "play," then it played through about 8 previews, including an ad for the new "Rambo," and then got stuck on a pre-menu screen that wouldn't give me any options (no written words) and just kept playing the menu music over and over. I tried all the advancing buttons, pushed top menu and pop-up menu and system menu. I stopped it and started it a few times. and even turned off the player and rebooted.

A one-in-three chance of problems isn't encouraging. Anyone have any ideas or is it possibly a defective disc rushed into the market to meet demand and plug the new Stallone movie?

One other thing I might mention: I have both hi-def players connected to one HDMI input on my Song HD Wega TV by means of a $100 HDMI switcher. I don't see how that can be tripping up the menu in my player, but I thought I'd mention it in case.

TIA for any ideas.

Do you have the most recent version of firmware in the player?

Thanks, BNG and Ry-o-o-oh-oh whatever. I haven't seen any one else having probs with "3:10" so I suspect that my new player is indeed in need of updated SW. This, of course, is how the lords of technology have us in their power. How long before they start charging for the machine updates to play the latest releases? ... I'm all for progress and upgrades, though, so if we have to pay for R&D, that's what I'm working for.

I'll let you know how things turn out. Meanwhile, other opinions still sought ...

Ive had some problems with my Panny-30 lately too. I got some of what you are describing when I watched Sunshine the other night. Picture freezing up in multiple places, and strange sounds, popping etc. in conjunction with the picture acting up. I think (hope) we will be seeing a firmware update soon. I've had the problem with Resident Evil: Extinction also, but to a lesser degree. That leads me to believe that this is all somehow related to Profile 1.1 even though I was not using the bonus-view features when I had problems. My panny has firmware 1.3 installed.

Oddly enough though, I watched 3:10 last night and it played flawlessly even though I was half expecting problems. Go figure...

I had the same with my Sony bdp-s1 and 3:10 to Yuma, but after the new update it worked fine. Seems that Yuma is one of the newer titles with its complications. Same thing happened with Dragon wars, another new title, so be prepared if you have any intentions to buy that one as well.
