Norway The Innocents - creepy fable about kids with powers

I saw this not long ago. It's very well-done but very f*cked up. The extremely graphic and unnecessary animal violence in one sequence prevents me from giving it a higher rating. It's a very solid B from me though.

The kids in the movie were at the Amanda Award show yesterday, and most of them haven't been allowed to watch the movie yet.

It got awards for
Best director: Eskil Vogt
Best photography/cinematography: Sturla Brandth Grøvlen (also shot Another Round)
Best sound design: Gisle Tveito og Gustaf Berger
Best editing: Jens Christian Fodstad

Didn't really enjoy this. I strongly disliked all of the animal abuse, and cruelty parts early on. I get that they're trying to paint the picture of what a
[Show spoiler]sociopath
behaves like, but it's way too on the nose. The movie is disturbing no doubt, but it has very little to do with the kids having abilities, and simply the fact that one of them is a
[Show spoiler]sociopath. Powers or not, he's going to do ****ed up shit like kill his mother, or animals, etc...
The powers simply speed up the process. The film doesn't exactly break any new ground, but it kept me interested enough til the end, and although it played out exactly as I thought it would, it was still a decent ending.

All the child actors did a good job, but thought the actress who played Anna (Alva Brynsmo Ramstad), the autistic sister, was really excellent at portraying someone developmentally challenged. It's her vulnerability, and her inability to communicate the cruelty and harshness she's experiencing is what touched me in the film more than anything else. Besides that though, the film doesn't have anything that would get me to watch it again.

Ever since becoming "father" to a cat, I've grown increasingly sensitive to such things. Thanks for the warning, I've lost all desire to watch this.

This isn't an Italian or Chinese film where they really killed animals. It's make believe for a movie and was disturbing, which I'm sure it was meant to be.

It's amazing when people are so sensitive to animals being fake killed on screen but are totally fine when it comes to humans. The animal scene is hard to watch but i wouldn't let it put you off, it's a really good film.

Of course that's mostly baked in to American culture because we anthropomorphize our kitties and what-not, but it's also because most four-legged victims did nothing more than just be smaller than their tormentors. (It's no different here.) And most people aren't totally fine when it comes to humans being hurt/killed in movies, only those who quote-unquote deserve some sort of retribution for specific actions.
