I've only been in the world of Blu for a week and a half now. I have been lurking on this site and the avs forums for a while. Reading comments on film and quality and all, I really wasn't dissapointed when I got my ps3 to play blu-ray films and upconvert my current DVD collection.
One thing though as striken me is that, besides a few exceptions, is the lack of extended cuts and director's cuts on blu-ray titles while standard DVD versions have been available for a long time. I understand studios want to milk a title (cough Evil Dead folks cough) but some title were recently released as extended cuts and are nowhere to be seen on blu-ray. A personal favorite of mine is classic action Swarzenegger "Commando" annonced for blu-ray. Cool, I recently got rid of my old early Fox release version to get the extended, anamorphic cut. I was about to pick it up until I heard about the BR version being released soon. BUT, it's not the extended cut hence I'm likely to get the standard DVD version until the BR version comes along. That said, looking at reviews of older flicks some aren't worth the investment because the upconversion is pretty much the same as it's BR counter part. I've recently watched "The Ten Commandments" upconverted and frankly I doubt it will be better in BR. The image is amazing at it is for an over 50 years old film. I've always functionned like this when getting a title I already had. This was on standard DVD so some don't apply but I think you will get the idea. 1. Is it an extended or dir.cut? 2. Is the image quality been remastered (for classic films) 3. Is is anamorphic (commando and early Fox, Paramount and Buena Vista titles weren't when it was first released)? 4. Do I like the film to the point of changing versions for extra documentaries or features? Besides #3 this is how I'm going to work with getting BR discs. This site is a great source for disc reviews ![]() |

There's no Anamorphic in HD. Anamorphic is used on SD to extend the 640x480 to 720x480 on Widescreen title. HD is 1920x1080p fixed ratio I mean Blade Runner on HD look like a 2000 filmed movie! The biggest problems with DVD is Edge Enhancement et DNR, all compagny use that and it's very very bad imho... On HD is much less used, there's some title here and there, but mostly they don't use EE or DNR |

if an additional cut exsists exspect a double dip at some point in the future when blu has a bigger user base

What i don't understand is...
With Blu-Rays awesome seamless branching... why do the studios not put every version of a film on the one disc?????? I was gutted this did not happen with Robocop (amongst others) Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind, & the Blade Runner bonus disc of other cuts, prove just how fantastic a multi-cut release can be We should in all honesty be expecting this of EVERY release where mutiple cuts of the film are know to exist. the reason is they want the cash from the diehard fans who will double dip just for some extra stuff on the disc. as for blu vs dvd, i have a 46" screen and ill say right now no dvd upconvert comes close to any of the blu's i own.....sure they look good.....but all i can think while im watching them is how much better they would look on blu.

Obviously anamorphic widescreen isn't a factor for high def stuff but the rest of my criterias still are worth considering for BR. Although I I would agree that most films will look better in BR I disagree that all will. Peoples own comments on this site for some film and even the reviewers states this.
Every new titles from now on yes I will take blu-ray but for catalogue titles, especially if it isn't a new cut, I will have to consider and read up reviews to see if its worth the "upgrade" or not. |
